GALT, Calif. (AP) -- An unarmed animal control officer was shot and killed in Sacramento County on Wednesday while trying to retrieve pets from a home whose owner was evicted the previous day.

The officer had gone to the home to rescue dogs and cats authorities thought had been left behind, a day after Joseph Francis Corey was served an eviction notice and a sheriff's deputy changed the locks.

The officer - Roy Curtis Marcum, 45, of Elk Grove - and a bank employee knocked on the door when Corey fired a shotgun through the door, striking the officer in the torso, Sacramento County Sheriff's Sgt. Jason Ramos said.

Too bad he wasn’t pushed to the point of making payments.

I have no idea how this guy got into his predicament, but I can say from experience that it is possible to work hard, sacrifice like crazy, do everything right and still lose everything. What happens in the emptiness after that is an ultimate test of your fiber. This guy failed. He may think that he was just too danged old and tired to start over again. And he might be right. It doesn't make what he did right, but I can't help but feel for him a bit.

If he could pull a trigger and kill someone, he could bag groceries. My experience has been that these crazies have more pride than work ethic.

He could have sold the gun and made a payment.

He had filed twice for bankruptcy and was on disability. Sounds like a low life to me.

I grew up in DuPage county. Seems there is an ordinance for every little thing. Park your car in the street after certain hours and get a ticket. Heck, I even got tickets for parking my car in my own driveway because it’s looks were not to their liking. I suppose such is why I moved to the middle of nowhere New Mexico 20 some odd years ago. I get a kick out of driving my old pickup back there to visit family and friends. It really stands out in the sea of perfectly polished SUV’s every lady is driving. Always feel naked without the shotgun, AR, and at least one pistol in it though.

Very well said jboot, "There are more desperate people every day. I expect a LOT more of this, and soon".

Someone also once said "calling it your job don't make it right", words that are going to see many people in mourning.

Of course it was. He was coming to take the mans property away. That’s normally called “thievery”. Unless the a-hole doing it is wearing a badge anyway.

Paraphrasing Jefferson, Government is not about reason. It is about force.

Updated: Government is a gun.

Not many Americans know what it to be desperate, alone and out of options. It is a severe test, especially for an older or unwell person. Take a man in those straits and subject him to the raw taking power of the State and you create a recipe for tragedy.

Government is a gun.

Which is the wrong tool for this application, hence the bad outcome.

This will just add to Banks being able to have their own SWAT teams for property repo.

John Melencamp?

Rain on the Scarecrow:

Scarecrow on a wooden cross Blackbird in the barn
Four hundred empty acres that used to be my farm
I grew up like my daddy did My grandpa cleared this land
When I was five I walked the fence while grandpa held my hand

Rain on the scarecrow Blood on the plow
This land fed a nation This land made me proud
And Son I’m just sorry there’s no legacy for you now
Rain on the scarecrow Blood on the plow
Rain on the scarecrow Blood on the plow

The crops we grew last summer weren’t enough to pay the loans
Couldn’t buy the seed to plant this spring and the Farmers Bank foreclosed
Called my old friend Schepman up to auction off the land
He said John it’s just my job and I hope you understand
Hey calling it your job ol’ hoss sure don’t make it right
But if you want me to I’ll say a prayer for your soul tonight
And grandma’s on the front porch swing with a Bible in her hand
Sometimes I hear her singing “Take me to the Promised Land”
When you take away a man’s dignity he can’t work his fields and cows

There’ll be blood on the scarecrow Blood on the plow
Blood on the scarecrow Blood on the plow

Well there’s ninety-seven crosses planted in the courthouse yard
Ninety-seven families who lost ninety-seven farms
I think about my grandpa and my neighbors and my name
And some nights I feel like dyin’ Like that scarecrow in the rain

Rain on the scarecrow Blood on the plow
This land fed a nation This land made me proud
And Son I’m just sorry they’re just memories for you now
Rain on the scarecrow Blood on the plow
Rain on the scarecrow Blood on the plow

Rain on the scarecrow Blood on the plow
This land fed a nation This land made me proud
And Son I’m just sorry they’re just memories for you now
Rain on the scarecrow Blood on the plow
Rain on the scarecrow Blood on the plow

The way I read it was that the owner had been evicted so should not have been there. It's just possible the officer was there to collect any pets left there so they wouldn't starve.

I guess sanity is a judgement call. Some people can rationalize about anything.

I once got a ticket for doing 57 in a 55, it felt like the officer was unjustly taking my property away.

And the jerk who shot through the door will be able to take really good care of his ‘family’ while living in prison.
