LONDON (WTVR) – Striking new MRI images show that for twins, sibling rivalry starts early–even before birth. Researchers in London were trying to find out more about a rare blood disease that can complicate the pregnancies for women carrying twins, when they captured video of what appears to be two fetuses pushing each other as they try to make more room.
Researchers at London’s Center for Fetal Care were studying a potentially deadly condition called twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome. It only occurs in identical twins, when the blood supply from one flows into the other. It can cause one twin to become much larger, leaving the smaller with health deficiencies.
The researchers say the study has provided unexpected insight into sibling relationships.

As a twin myself, I have but one thing to say. File this story under the heading...Duh.
I have identical twins who are 28. I also have two singletons.
I would disagree that they are “fighting”. Part of it is just that they are moving and working their muscles. Part is the reaction to the stimuli of the other moving. All of my kids were active in the womb at various times. Some more than others. With the twins, when one “woke” up and was active, it didn’t take very long for the other to do the same. Looking at the video reminded me of feeling that all those years ago.
On the other hand, one of their singleton siblings would often get himself into one position or another that would be painful for me. I would then physically try to move him by pushing from the outside. It would usually work, but he would always respond by more movement.
Maybe it is me, but I think it is on the deceptive side to say that they were fighting. Or maybe I just read it wrong.

As a fraternal twin, I can definitely say that twins fight.
Of course I have the advantage in that I am better looking, and was the good twin and while my brother was the evil twin! ;)

MY sister and I were absolute mortal enemies when we were growing up. She was 5 years younger and knew exactly how to work over dad so I was at a serious disadvantage.
I have 2 boys (8 and 9) now and it seems to me that their only real objective each day when they wake up is "must agitate my brother". The bickering is absolute and non-stop.
I'm really proud of them though because on the occasion when another kid at school or the playground opted to pick a fight with one of them, they find out quickly that brothers come in pairs, through thick and thin.
I remember praying for your precious Granddaughter and also sharing your joy at the birth of her twins. I’m so happy now to read your update. God bless and keep you all.

Your thoughts ring true to me too, but I don’t have twins and therefore can’t offer personal comment. I showed this video to my husband, (he’s a retired medical doctor) and he agreed that they’re kicking or “fighting” for comfort reasons, because of the limited space. Whether it’s “in the womb sibling rivalry” is quite another matter.....
All of mine were singleton’s and each one was different, although, looking back, the two boys were a lot more active.

I have a twin sister we are almost 53 she always kids me that she is older by 3 minutes I tell its ok i was sitting on your face for 9 months
Same thing with my girlfriend. She had twins but even the doctor didn’t know it....we are talking over 40 years ago...the first was born and the nurse told the doctor there was another baby and the doctor said “your Kidding” and the father (hubby close friend) “I hope to god your kidding” he was in the delivery room...both weighted over 5 pounds and they were not identicals.. another girl friend has twins and I will never forget their weights....one was 7 pounds 10 oz, the over was 6 pounds 5 oz. That girl was huge during her preg...again about 40 years ago. I had my first around the same time.....he weighted 5 pounds 6 oz...
Uh, yep! Unfortunately, he's a dyed in the wool liberal/democrat! So, we're exactly the same, but different! :)
