What in the world are 21000 people doing in that miserable place?

A good question. Of course one could always ask "where would they go?" because no country that you'd want to immigrate to wants immigrants these days. But there are also facts from Wikipedia:

Palau's economy consists primarily of tourism, subsistence agriculture, and fishing. Tourist activity focuses on scuba diving and snorkeling in the islands' rich marine environment, including its barrier reefs walls and World War II wrecks. The government is the major employer of the work force, relying heavily on financial assistance from the US. [...]

Taxes are moderate, the income tax has 3 brackets with medium rates (9.3%, 15% and 19.6%), corporate tax is 4% and general sales tax is 7.5%. There are no property taxes.

Let's count: tropical climate, abundance of fish, job paid by someone else's money, no property taxes... what more do you actually want? :-) They have it made, more so than the people in 57 states.

"The gubermint relies heavily on financial assistance from the U.S."

What the fluke??????

Is this chain of fly specks in the ocean a U.S. Territory, a U.S. Protectorate, a U.S. colony, a U.S. airforce base.....or what!

What's with the financial assistance? Do the 21,000 souls vote Democrat by secret computers wired to Ohio?

What's the story here? How many tiny atolls around the planet are we subsidizing on the QT? Good grief.....!!!!

Under the terms of the Compact of Free Association with the United States all citizens of Palau have the right to habitually reside in the United States. All of them. No visas, no quotas, no green card required.

well, they have the no property taxes correct! It is criminal and unamerican to have to pay the government even after paying off the banks, to own your own home.
