You would guess wrong. I do own my own business and have been self employed since 1999. I have had as many as 12 employees in the past.

“Forcing the free loaders to share the cost is not the Government’s respsonsbility”

This all came about when Democrats thought it would be a good idea to make hospitals give people free care if they showed up. At the time, the point was made that if it was made illegal for hospitals to refuse care then some people wouldn’t have an incentive to maintain insurance...that is exactly what happened.

Romneycare and Obamacare are both attempts to fix the ill effects of what was essentially the FEDGOV sticking its nose in where it doesn’t belong in an effort to get votes.

Now every free service is becoming a human right and there will be no end except to our Republic unless our leaders stand up and do what is morally right.

They will not do this...they are only interested in self preservation on both sides of the aisle...so we will see Clinton-Bush 2 in 2016.

The Healthcare debate was shifted from whether or not we should have it to how many and which types should we provide right under your nose with the help of both parties and all 3 branches right on cue.

Every single elected official is signed sealed and delivered by the Insurance Companies and the banks.

“Too big to fail” ring a bell? You keep toeing the party line and supporting your stalking horse Romney... I think they all need to go...I think Romney was window dressing on a pre-determined election.

I apologize for being so harsh, it’s just that not being the best informed myself, I was informed enough to know better in 2008, but it (being informed) was then as is now useless when it comes to voting as we are outvoted by the Kool-Aid drinkers,by the sentimentalists and moochers of course, and that just raises my blood pressure. Again, apologies.

Does he want to keep you on the Government Plantation?

You are absolutely right in all that you say. I really have trouble conceiving why someone would be pissed off about the fact that I came to a reasoned decision about what's best for the everyone. Even in my most extreme liberal days, I would have always welcome hearing someone with another perspective, and I would never have allowed said perspective to influence my personal relationship with a family member.

Degrees have nothing to do with it. It’s not about intelligence its about over stating your point in contacting him in the first place.

It was too long. I didn’t read it all myself. And I have a degree too. Overall the tone was respectful but I seriously doubt he read it all.

I said you were being two faced because in your email to him you sound genuine and sincere about keeping family together and then a post to someone......laughing about using your own child to get to him and grandma. Be honest.

>> I am to the right of Attila the Hun in economic freedom.

No you’re not.

>> The best part of Romneycare is that it forces the free loaders to share the burden

That which “forces” is not a force for Liberty.

An unregulated market is a free market.

No worries, you’re in good company.

You might send this “test” to your FIL, as well.

If he is only impressed with black “leadership”, he might be interested in Francis Rice’s “Black History Test”, wherein, he can educate himself as to which party is and HAS been on his side historically.

(you might “bait” him into paying attention to this test, as it was compiled by a brilliant black woman.)

Good luck and I admire your trying to reason with him. I’ve given up on my sister who boasts about a Harvard education, but doesn’t have the common sense to realize she’s about to be bitten by her “choice” in the HOMOPOTUS.

Libs are unwilling to admit what they are. They hold the keys to jail, not freedom. They are market communists. They hold one thing in common... All are takers.

If this is a real communication, which I doubt, it’s a classic example of how NOT to win an arguement. The tone is obsequious and apologetic, as well as self-justifying in a way that gives the offensive father-in-law the advantage.
Never explain to a stupid, mean-spirited Dem about all the good works you have done (among the poor, sick, Blacks, whatever). Nevertheless explain anything to them, because the number one thing that we know about them is that facts mean nothing to them.
If it were me in that situation, I would simply ignore the entire incident.
But if I said anything, it would be along the lines of,
Dear Fred, I was sorry to hear that you were so upset when you learned that I voted differently from you. I was raised with the understanding that our political system was constructed with the concept of the individual vote, not tribalism or voting en masse as part of a clan. If it was your expectation that when I married Marjorie I would vote the way you do, I am sorry that you were disappointed.

I apologize for being so harsh,

No apology necessary. I would feel the same way if I was in your shoes. Just keep in mind that young people voted like 75/25 for Obama or something like that, so ultimately, we're going to have to convince half of them that they made a mistake, and it's OK, in order to win on the national scale.

You sound like a great husband and father. Whatever happens... you wife will always know that you tried and that makes all the difference. You are establishing a legacy for your own family and sometimes that means taking a stand for what is right. I am not talking about a person/politician but the ideal that this country was founded upon. God Bless your family and thank you for being a thoughtful husband, father and SIL. Thank you for sharing your letter.

Even in my most extreme liberal days, I would have always welcome hearing someone with another perspective...

Well then, you were a rare liberal indeed - most likely a product of your upbringing, environment and political culture. Young indoctrinated libs with this attitude, which usually comes with common sense as well (a rare commodity these days), are pretty much destined to jump the plantation fence at some point later in their lives once they realize how things really work in the world.

Another plus is that you're obviously quite intelligent, based upon reading your missive - which I did read (obviously unlike some who have responded to this thread). Ignoring the past support for Obama, I found myself in agreement with the majority of what you wrote beyond that point, although not all. As for the responders claiming the letter was too long - that's probably true. But I can sympathize, since I often do the same thing myself. I'm famous for horribly long emails.

As to one of your original questions about whether this sort of approach would work to sway traditionally D demographics, I have no idea. To me it mostly sounded like logical arguments for conservative ideals, with a bit less pandering (for obvious personal reasons). I'd certainly like to think that's the right approach, since pandering and promising free stuff is absolutely the wrong answer if you truly believe in individual freedom, limited government and free economies. Maybe it really is just a question of getting the message out in minority communities, but I really don't know how you do that. The stupid party (Republicans) hasn't had a candidate since Reagan who bothered to even TALK about and explain, in well understood terms, the pros and cons of economic conservatism. During the debates I heard an inkling of it from Ryan when he was trying to get a word in edgewise with the mean, obnoxious drunk he was sentenced to "debate," but that was about it.

BTW, I had no idea that Obama's claimed position on education is as you state it. I'll take you at your word there, but I find it really hard to believe - meaning he's lying yet again, as he pretty much always does. What has Obama actually done in terms of charter schools & teacher accountability? Answer: Nothing. And don't hold your breath. That's straight up anti-NEA, and unions are the bread and butter that keep that tyrant and his tyrannical party in power - which is all they care about. He will never bite the hand that feeds him and put him in power as a Manchurian candidate, no matter what supposed positions he claims to support on education.

Yes. Education. Something at which Romney and McCain failed. Failed to educate, to inform, to expose. As if such were the rules of the gentlemanly game they and other Republicans like the Bushes played. Platitudes in response to vicious, misleading and relentless propaganda of the other side. I can never forgive them that.

I’m sorry that he has put you in this position.

I have Political “disagreements” with some of my Wife’s Family as well, specifically her Sister and her Liberal Retired PHD College Professor Husband.

I choose to have as little contact with them as possible while being mindful of the Family dynamics. They are out of State and I see them in person maybe once a year, if that.

Let’s just say that they now know better than to challenge my take regarding the current Political landscape. Since the ascention of the Obama, any comment made to me is met with a quick and decisive response for which they have no defense outside of the usual “blame Bush” kneejerk reaction.

I feel for your situation since your Wife and Children are forced to play a major part in whatever actions you decide are necessary.

Funny how as a child I could never get my head around how the Civil War was able to turn Brother against Brother. Thanks to the great divide we have today, it seems like a more plausible premise than I would have ever imagined. I find myself using the term "Good Germans" when discussing people who support the current crop of Democrat Socialists running, or should I say ruining our Nation.

One of the most well-written pieces on all that was wrong with the candidate, his record, his way of governing and clearly the impacts of his policies. You have articulated your position well. I hope your father in law reads it...and then reads it over and over again. His loss of you as a family member would be his loss. His daughter married well. And I certainly hope he can have the relationship with your son that you desire. I wish I could have articulated my thoughts as you have. I wish you well.

I’m coming up on 69 years old and have to say that it is probably a waste of time to argue with a liberal who believes money grows on trees. We are on the verge of national bankruptcy and that is all that matters. Once that happens a lot of people will have the scales fall from their eyes.

I hate to put it in these terms but I am reminded of the adoring Germans who worshiped Hitler. Only after they were reduced to utter ruin did they come to their senses. Some people like Goebbels and his family committed suicide rather than not live under “national socialism.” As yourself how a westernized “Christian” nation could be so thoroughly mesmerized by such a demagogue as Hitler and his palpable nonsense.

Think about this. what do Obama and Hitler have in common?

They are/were both actual or near psychopaths who demonize their enemies, tell lies continuously and look for scapegoats to blame their problems on. In Hitler’s case it was the Jews who were demonized and then slaughtered in the millions. In Obama’s case it is the “rich” who are demonized and everyone seems to have a little envy if not downright hatred because so many believe they gained their wealth by less than honorable means. So Obama just keeps on keeping on with his lies and rewriting of history and economic lunacy and so many people seem to believe it. Why else could they possibly reelect such a man? When the nation descends into total economic ruin, some people will finally see what they have done to themselves but probably not sooner.

You have gone above and beyond. Be at peace about all this disagreed thoughts and family dissonance. You just have to move on if your father in law cannot accept or is a control freak. It took us about a year or two with my mother years ago but she came around and respected my husband finally.
