This gun says Winchester Model 770 right on the barrel and that is why I think I’m having a big problem. I’m ready to throw it in the trash!

Does it look like this? Sounds like maybe the firing pin is uncocked.

I think the 770 is the cheaper version of the M70 that they only made for a few years. Bolt should probably be the same though.
