Too true. But it will take some time for this to sink in for most people. There is a basic assumption that we are not a banana republic. But time will expunge that little fancy.

The assumption you speak of has a psychological term.
It is known as “Normalcy Bias”.
Unfortunately, it does NOT heal itself over time. It only gets worse. Why? because people have an investment in their own errors... and in addition to overcoming the bias, they are forced to admit that they were wrong. By the time that Normalcy Bias gives in to reality through direct impact, and people are willing to admit their error, it is too late.
