GOP Considers 'Doomsday' Fiscal Cliff Plan ("Becoming The Most Likely Scenario")

(Newser) – With fiscal cliff negotiations going, in John Boehner's words, "nowhere," Republicans are considering what ABC News correspondent Jon Karl calls a "doomsday" contingency plan. Under the plan—which Karl's sources say "is becoming the most likely scenario"—the House would approve extending the middle class Bush tax cuts, but would agree to absolutely nothing else before the holiday recess, leaving President Obama to face massive spending cuts and another debt ceiling showdown as soon as Congress returned.

In other fiscal cliff news:

Nancy Pelosi is threatening to use a maneuver called the "discharge petition" to bring the Senate's already-passed bill averting the cliff to the House floor whether Boehner likes it or not, CNN reports. Pelosi would then need to woo a handful of Republicans to her side to actually pass the bill.

Congressional veterans tell Reuters not to worry about the apparent gridlock; it's well-established that little gets done on Capitol Hill until just before the holiday recess. "The Congress doesn't work on the clock," one GOP senator observes. "It works on the calendar."

Boehner and Obama actually largely agree on the long-term portion of the deal, but they're miles apart on the short-term "down payment," the New York Times reports. Obama wants a large down payment paid for mostly with tax hikes on the wealthy; Republicans want a smaller one including entitlement cuts.

The Times also has a piece observing that Obama has toughened his negotiating posture, after a first term in which he seemed to constantly offer what he considered compromises, only to have Republicans reject them and demand more.

That was my understanding: the cliff is simply sequestration come due. All or nothing. We shall see that Bush’s cuts weren’t just for the evil rich.

It upsets me too. Cutting those that have little to no chance of absorbing the cuts, much less recovering..... is a damn shame.

Current law will raise everyone’s taxes and cut defense spending and trigger a recession. Let O and the O voters live the dream. See if O can keep his jury rigged coalition together when the middle class has to pay taxes again after a 10 year respite. End the representation without taxation. Now.

“little gets done on Capitol Hill until just before the holiday recess”

Two years ago those gutless wonders passed “Obamacare” on Christmas Eve.
But no worries. According to the Mayan calendar we only have 17 days to live.

Thanks. I may cancel next week's appointment with my dental hygienist.

How can the House vote on a revenue bill which originated in the Senate?

Why is it the first cut is always the elderly.

The elderly aren't touched.

What is being discussed is cuts to Medicare to people UNDER 55.

And BTW...the first cut is not always the elderly. You forget..the elderly's lobbyists have brought us to this point where the elderly are taking the lionshare of the budget. They haven't been the first to get cut...they've been the first to grab Federal money.

Indeed they are, but that is because conservatives allow it to happen.

Please Republicans! Walk away from this pompous a$$ of a President and let this thing happen. Then “the Bush tax cuts” would finally and at last be history. From that time on, the Obamanation would have to put it’s own name on every damaging policy it pushes through or decees by Executive Order. If Republicans fold on this they can bend over and kiss themselves goodbye anyhow. They may as well be remembered for standing on their principles(or the ones they have left.)
