Actually, I am starting to think that NOTHING was a campaign issue for Romney. We’re in a state that was guaranteed to go a majority for him so saw absolutely no TV/radio ads or mailings from the campaign and can only wonder what they were doing in the rest of the country (besides making the consultants richer).
You are right; Romney ran because it "was his turn" not because he stood for anything. His advocates relied on the old "he's better than the opposition" and his 'campaign' was that of appealing to moderate/"undecided" voters while utterly neglecting the base relying on the peer-pressure from the "he's better than the opposition"-people.
Thus we can see the truth of the old maxim: if you try to please everyone, you will please no-one. -- We were also treated to a very interesting look into the heart of the GOP elites/leadership: the blatant manipulation at the primaries to ensure Romney as candidate, the rule-changes at the RNC to ensure electors vote for Romney, the refusal to seat delegates at the RNC, etc.
