At first blush, it seems to make policy sense, too. The rich fabric of America's civic life, from Boy Scouts to community orchestras to soup kitchens, is the envy of the world. Its diversity reflects in part how much it depends on private givers with diverse interests and motives, and not just on the government. Their giving is encouraged by the charitable deduction, enacted in 1917, just four years after the income tax itself. The deduction lets people feel they are beating the system even as they practice virtue.

For far too long, we personally have been helping to subsidize United Way, the Red Cross and just about every other sucker charity with a sob story. Not only did we send money, but I spent alot of time collecting and helping out several local food banks.
No more. The people have spoken. They wanted more of Obama. So, Uncle Barry can put the turkey on the table, the toys under the tree. The onus is on the freeloaders. From here on out, all charity starts & ends at home.
If we’re really serious about shedding light on the government spending problem, it’s time to crash the system. Let the takers do it. Let them demand, demand, demand... I won’t contribute one more dime to the bellringers or anyone else.
I take a hit every year on taxes, but I will not get receipts from Goodwill or other entities, nor claim my gifts on taxes. The Bible says (and I paraphrase) give without expecting anything in return and do not promote your giving.
I take that literally. I just give. My employer also gives extra PTO for community service but I don’t record my time since I volunteer where I want to and not off some list of approved ways (just having a 501c3 does not make it a place I want to help, plus they disallow religious groups).
I said that myself on Nov. 6. I told my husband not to give another dime to anyone. The government will collect it from us and give it to them anyway.
Get rid of the income tax and the problem dissolves into nothingness.

Budget you will find a LOT of your taxes go into charities, anyways ( I think the % was 60% of all money to Red Cross, UW and some others was paid for by tax dollars, don;t quote me). Of course little, if any, went to religious entities. I read that years ago, and don’t give dookie anymore.
My wife sometimes complains I am getting more rigid and literal, I argue that I have less time and don’t want to waste it. She really hates it when I go off on immigration and pop culture.
Any time you spend on pop culture is probably wasted.
My grandfather was a very charitable person. He regularly purchased groceries for many people in town. That charitable behavior ceased when the income tax was instituted and the government began handing out the confiscated money to those who he had supported. He saw no further justification for doing charitable acts if the government was going to forcibly confiscate his money and do that "charity" in his place.
I agree. Other than a few documentaries, occasional hunting show I watch for the scenery, and movie made before 1975 I watch very little tv.
I really hate tv especially certain channels and shows. I bemoan the Disney, ABC Family, and Nick channels they are the worst because they mask themselves as family and they really are not. Almost every show has a doofus dad with an attractive, under dressing, unaware mom, (if indeed two parents) and kids who constantly talk back and try to emulate adult lifestyles and drama (dating, sex etc...). Authority figures are always clueless and portrayed as draconian. The other channels are at least overt about their agendas.
My lovely wife who has two graduate degrees and a very sought after professional in her field occasionally watches one of the “Real Housewives of Loserville” and we have a difficult moment when I say it confuses me how a smart, conservative woman could watch that shiite. She says it is just an escape from reality so I say escape to the kitchen and make me a sandwich. I then get to spend hours in the garage or yard :)
One of the best lines is from a RINO Arnold movie True Lies when Tom Arnold’s characters goes on his rant about “You aren’t her parents anymore, her parents are Axl Rose and Madonna, you can’t compete with that kind of bombardment”
Sometimes I get bored and want to poke the bear... Most times she ignores me and smiles others I am a married bachelor a few days.
Same here. I give to people I know. Have a cousin poor as a church mouse, occasionally I will take her to buy groceries. Have a good friend, poor, bought her a Christmas tree the other day and took it to her. She was shocked.
And I definitely don’t give cash....to anyone.

There used to be a tradition about using a money jar to give to the poor at this season. Now I find that that jar grows very slowly since I use cash so sparingly. Then again, the tradition of leaving the jar on a poor family’s porch leaves out the danger of the neighborhoods, lack of porches and the desire not to have charity go for booze or pot.
Traditions aren’t what they used to be in these changing times!
The article has a lot of interesting assumptions. Major one that a tax DEDUCTION is the same as getting money from the State.
