In a rare public policy speech, former President George W. Bush said Tuesday that immigrants both help the American economy and “invigorate our soul.”

“America is a nation of immigrants. Immigrants have helped build a country that we have became, and immigrants can help build a dynamic tomorrow. Not only do immigrants help build our economy, they invigorate our soul,” Bush said.

Before the hotheads jump in, please note that GW didn’t say one thing in praise of illegal immigration.

Unless a few native Americans chime in, we’re all the product of immigration.

Remember, he's talking about Hispanics. Not ALL immigrants.

A "new America" is just another way of saying "transform America".

We are now one of the largest Spanish-speaking nations in the world. We're a major source of Latin music, journalism and culture.

Just go to Miami, or San Antonio, Los Angeles, Chicago or West New York, New Jersey ... and close your eyes and listen. You could just as easily be in Santo Domingo or Santiago, or San Miguel de Allende.

For years our nation has debated this change -- some have praised it and others have resented it. By nominating me, my party has made a choice to welcome the new America.

Our future cannot be separated from the future of Latin America.

As I speak, we are celebrating the success of democracy in Mexico.

George Bush from a campaign speech in Miami, August 2000.

You can read the speech here.

Here is an excerpt of a good critique of that speech:

In equating our intimate historic bonds to our mother country and to Canada with our ties to Mexico, W. shows a staggering ignorance of the civilizational facts of life. The reason we are so close to Britain and Canada is that we share with them a common historical culture, language, literature, and legal system, as well as similar standards of behavior, expectations of public officials, and so on. Immigrants (legal) and illegal aliens re-elected Soetoro.

You nailed it.

Either Bush et al are incurably stupid or they have another agenda altogether.

There are several Mexican restaurants where I live, but no Canadian restaurants. Not even a Tim Horton's.

No British restaurants either that I know of, but it is possible to find stores which sell Scotch.

Ignorant demagoguery isn’t much of a recipe for intelligent policy.

We are rapidly approaching banana republic status complete with a tyrannical dictator and rubber stamp “legislature”. It would all be comical if it wasn’t such a threatening situation.

You know, he has a Spanish-daughter-in-law, which was always the claim for his support of immigrants. I say, What’s he running for? Dog Catcher is an electable position down on his ranch? As far as FUGWB!, I share your sentiments.

“Unless a few native Americans chime in, we’re all the product of immigration.”

Wrong.

We were originally a nation of English colonists. The differences between colonists and immigrants cannot be overstated.

Since right after our founding, the vast majority of Americans have always been born here.

Even during the last years of the nineteenth century and the early years of the twentieth, with huge levels of legal immigration, the VAST MAJORITY of Americans were born here.

The vast majority of Americans are still born here.

Those facts fly in the face of what’s taught in school, but they are the facts nevertheless.

This nation’s history of immigration has been utterly distorted and lied about to further the idea that there is no distinction between an American and an immigrant. That there is no such thing as an American. If no one is an American, then everyone can be.

We can’t survive as a nation if this lie isn’t confronted and rejected.

We’re not a nation of immigrants. We’re a nation of citizens.

We have “president” who has produced a rank, crude forgery for a “birth certificate.” Everyone knows it. No one will speak up. Even those we would like to think are men of integrity, like Paul Ryan. That’s the hardest part to swallow.
