At the conclusion of the interview, the interviewer (Liesman, I think) pressed Geitner repeatedly to indicate one politically significant concession that Obama has made to the Republicans.

Although Geitner spoke many words in feigned response to the questions, he was at a loss to indicate any significant concession.

Knowing full well the spinelessness of most Republicans, why would Obama deign to concede anything?

Geitner is an idiot.
America went over the cliff during Obama’s first term. We lost our 4A credit rating and we topped 16 TRILLION dollars in debt, adding 1 TRILLION each year. The fiscal cliff is just political nonsense. A game the politicians play on the citizens.

Let's go and while we're at it, the GOP should just not do anything involving the debt ceiling, Continuing Resolutions, Obamacare, etc.

Shut ‘er down!

My tax increases are severe. Yet I agree with Timmy in that I am also very willing to go over the cliff. I find that the satisfaction I would get in knowing that many Americans will lose their unemployment insurance benefits outweighs the financial pain I will feel.

We already went over the cliff when the Fed started printing money to buy the debt no one else would buy.

All of this talk about debt ceilings and cliffs is just a diversion. We blew past the real ceiling and went off the cliff two years ago.

Right now they are just looking for the GOP to play chump, and the GOP is happy to oblige.

The dems are willing to go over the cliff? I felt like it was their intention all along. We’ve seen before that when we give the okay to raise taxes on some they take as a sign it okay to raise taxes on everybody.

Republicans do not know how to negotiate.

The Republicans should start with a position to lower taxes.

Make Obama come up with cuts of spending.

Nothing passes unless Republicans agree, we control the House.

Make the President perform.

Let's go of the cliff!

Is not the "fiscal cliff" nothing more than a steep rise in taxes? The Democrats always, always want more taxes. This situation looks like a Win-Win for the Democrats. No matter what happens the Democrats will blame the Republicans.

The Democrats cannot be unhappy about more taxes. Getting more tax revenue and blaming the Republicans is probably too irresistible.

If the Republicans cave and cry "uncle" even better for the Democrats! What a deal! Republicans raising taxes makes them equal to Democrats, quite a turn off.

With this statement, Geithner has essentially threatened the United States with economic catastrophe. It seems to me that men have been legally killed by the government for lesser threats.

There is a government policy that the US will not assassinate foreign leaders. However, Geithner is not a foreign leader, and if his threat is seen as a clear and present danger to the US, it might invoke mechanisms to remove such a threat.

Such was the case of the late Clinton Commerce Secretary Ron Brown, who was alleged to have sold classified information about National Security Agency listening posts to the Chinese.

While what he is alleged to have done was damaging to the agency, what Geithner is doing could cause a severe depression harming millions of Americans.
