Meet Tim Scott, The Man Conservatives Want To Replace Jim DeMint (Nikki Haley can appoint him)

Tim Scott, a U.S. Representative from South Carolina, is quickly becoming the favorite to replace South Carolina Senator Jim DeMint, who announced his resignation from Congress Thursday morning.

CNN's Peter Hamby first reported that DeMint — who leaves to head up the Heritage Foundation, a conservative Washington think tank — wants Scott to be his replacement. It's a choice that makes sense to conservatives as South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley prepares to make an appointment.

Whomever Haley appoints will hold the seat until a special election is held in 2014 to pick a permanent replacement to fill DeMint's seat.

There are a number of reasons Scott looks to be the favorite. His potential appointment would make him the only African-American member of the Senate. He is also described as a bona fide conservative who is viewed favorably by the Tea Party types of his party.

Erick Erickson, a prominent conservative blogger and founder of RedState.com, immediately put Scott's name forward Thursday:

Love it! We haven’t had a good liberal head-explosion for a while...plus he looks like a great guy and a great choice. The ability to run as the incumbent in 2014 will give him a huge edge.

“DO IT, NIKKI!!!”

I thought Nikki had gone over to the dark side in recent months. If that’s true, she’ll let the mainstream gop pick the next one.

RE: Is there a good candidate to replace him in congress?

I don’t know about South Carolina, but in NY when Anthony Weiner resigned, there was a special election to replace him (Bob Tuner, a Republican, won that one then ).

I did a “google” search on “Tim Scott South Carolina.”

Try it and see what comes up as the fourth or fifth suggestion.

Libs are disgusting.

[Tim Scott, a U.S. Representative from South Carolina...]

He would be a GREAT replacement but don’t hold your breath that Haley will appoint him. Personally, I think she is like a wobbling spinning top.

IF she has the courage to ignore RINO’S influence and appoint him, she has my vote for reelection.

Did Turner keep his seat in this last election?

Presumably, the special election will be for a 2-year term to fill the remainder of Demint’s 6 years (2010-16). Believe Lindsey is due to run in 2014 also.

Personally, I would rather see Tim Scott primary out Lindsey Graham. It gives him time to groom a replacement in his congressional district.

Joe Wilson would be a better choice at this point simply because the best test of who should get the job is "Who would upset Obama the most?"

I don't know, I hope it's not true.

IMO, Scott is the perfect choice. A true conservative who will drive the Senate Dems nuts.

____________________________

ON THE ISSUES:

Taxes and spending – Scott believes that federal spending and taxes should be reduced.

Health care – Scott believes the 2010 health care reform law should be repealed. Scott states that the health care in the U.S. is one of the greatest in the world, asserting that people all over the world come to study in American medical schools, waiting lists are rare, and Americans are able to choose their insurance, providers, and course of treatment. Scott supports an alternative to the health care bill that he says keeps these benefits while controlling costs by reforming the medical tort system by having a limit on non-economic damages and by reforming Medicare.

Earmarks- Scott opposes earmarks.

Economic development - He supports infrastructure development and public works for his district believing it will improve the economy. He opposes restrictions on deepwater oil drilling.

Social issues – Scott describes himself as pro-life. Scott supports adult and cord blood stem cell research. He opposes embryonic stem cell research IF funded by taxpayers. He opposes the creation of human embryos for experimentation. and opposes assisted suicide. Opposes legalization of gay marriage.

Immigration – Scott supports federal legislation that is similar to the Arizona law, Arizona SB 1070. He supports strengthening penalties for employers who knowingly hire illegal immigrants. He also promotes cultural assimilation by making English the official language in the government, and by requiring new immigrants to learn English.

Labor –Scott has a pro-business orientation.

Foreign Policy -Scott advocates a continued military presence in Afghanistan and believes an early withdrawal will benefit Al-Qaeda. He also views Iran as the world’s most dangerous country and believes that the US should aid pro-democracy groups there.

Congressional Committee assignments

Scott was appointed by the House Republican Steering Committee to both the Committee on Transportation and the Committee on Small Business. He was later appointed to the powerful Committee on Rules and relinquished his other two committee assignments.

Tim Scott is unmarried. He owns an insurance agency and he is also a partner in Pathway Real Estate Group, LLC

Sadly, NO. His district was RE-DISTRICTED out and this month will be his last month in office.

For those who don’t know....

In 1997, Tim Scott supported having the Ten Commandments posted outside the county council chambers, saying it would remind members of the absolute rules they should follow.

The county council then unanimously approved the display and Scott personally nailed a King James version of the Commandments to the wall.

Shortly after, the ACLU and Americans United for Separation of Church and State sued. After an initial court ruling said the display was unconstitutional, the council settled to avoid accruing more legal fees.

Regarding the costs of the suit, Scott said, “Whatever it costs in the pursuit of this goal (of displaying the Commandments) is worth it”

I like to see Joe Wilson in the Senate. He’s not afraid to speak his mind.

Too soon for Scott to jump to Senate. Need a proven congress critter. Scott may be a good replacement for Graham.

Joe Wilson and Tim Scott would make a great team after Lindsey girl is retired. Tim will also have another two years in the House under his belt and nobody can accuse us of tokenism. Plus (and I think this is the biggie), Tim Scott is the BEST choice to whip the Graham girl in a primary.

He is black.
Sad to say it, but politically that is the most important fact. Its not that he will drive anyone in the Senate nuts, but he also seems to have the skill to be one of the voices and more importantly, faces of the party. This is very important to all future political contests across the country.
