The commercial itself is hardly controversial. Comedian and talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres, wearing holiday-themed gloves and hat, sits at a diner table with three of Santa's elves. She asks them to make more toys for a JC Penney contest, and ends up accidentally insulting the tiny little helpers with a bunch of clumsy short jokes.

I agree. Their main objection seems to be that Ellen is a lesbian, even though she says nothing to indicate that in the commercial.
Anne Heche is her name and most people think she was with Ellen in order to gain publicity. She had a career for a while but I think the brief stint as a lesbo with Ellen ruined it for her instead of helping her career.
The reason Ellen kicked her out was because Anne was dating men right along and keeping it hidden. Saturday Night Live did a sketch on one of their programs about it back in the day.
Anne Heche was married to a guy named Coleman Laffoon and they had a child they named Homer.
She’s still working, according to IMDB she’s been in a couple tv series, some recent movies some in post-production. Maybe mixed up, but still employed.
I don’t think she was ever mixed up, she was just using Ellen. The last movie I remember her doing was “Six days, Seven Nights” with Harrison Ford. Not a bad movie, IMO.
