LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — A chlorine gas leak that sickened nearly 200 people at a Tyson Foods plant in Arkansas last year happened because a worker who couldn't read the English-language label on a barrel of chemicals inadvertently poured bleach into it, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in a report released Thursday.

Calling this a "language barrier" is not accurate. If the CDC report is accurate, I'd call this "political correctness," which states that requiring employees to learn how to read English is "racism" and "discrimination," and that upholding "diversity" is more important than upholding safety.

Here’s a point of general advice - if you don’t know what a chemical is, don’t pour a strong oxidiser like bleach into it.

I’m assuming the emp was African or Asian, because EVERYTHING these days in the US has Espanol text. Unless he was an illiterate Hispanic.

Chances are, the guy has no idea what an “oxidizer” is, and hell, probably not what bleach is either. lol

“Tyson Foods disputed the report, saying federal investigators misidentified the worker who caused the accident. Company spokesman Gary Mickelson told The Associated Press the worker who mixed the chemicals speaks English as his primary language and was able to read the label, but didn’t.”

That’s very possible. In my career I witnessed many highly paid union factory employees do stupid stuff, including 2 deaths.

That stuck out to me as well. Tyson’s defense is that they didn’t hire an illiterate, they hired an idiot.

Considering their trade with the Yankees, I’ll bet Tyler Chicken has even bigger issues.

I’ve never seen one of those labels printed in fewer than 3 languages. And even if he couldn’t read, he should at least have seen the symbols on it. This sounds like a very flimsy excuse.

“Tyson Foods disputed the report, saying federal investigators misidentified the worker who caused the accident.”

It wasn’t the non-English-speaker, it was the idiot.

I guess that does shift blame from Tyson’s to the employee.

Guy wasn't hispanic, and knew how to read English AND, best of all, knew the mixture was dangerous.

Notice that he lived through it ~ the chemical terms on the label, etc. are the same in all languages.

This was an Arkansas situation, so you’ll never see a highly paid union employee do anything at all there.
