Philadelphia, PA — For most football fanatics, this is the time of year for watching the big conference championship games and wondering whether their favorite college team is going play in a major postseason bowl. Many of the players in these contests will be hoping to shine for the NFL scouts looking to recruit new talent. That's not the case this weekend.
Few of the players I'll be watching on Saturday are likely to get a call from Jerry Maguire. They won't be hearing an agent shouting, "Show me the money!" In fact, all the players on the gridiron here in Philadelphia have already been "recruited." And the outcome of the game on Saturday isn't going to alter their paychecks next year by a single cent. They will be playing in one of our greatest sports rivalries — the 122 year-old contest between the United States Military Academy at West Point and the United States Naval Academy — known more widely as The Army-Navy Game.
As the two teams take to the field, millions here in the United States will be watching on CBS. And around the world, tens of thousands more will be watching on the Armed Forces Network. Though officially frowned upon, wagers will be made aboard ships at sea, at lonely outposts in the shadows of the Hindu Kush and on U.S. military bases from Japan and the Korean peninsula to Europe and all the way to Mesopotamia. The seniors playing here won't be going to the NFL. Instead, many of them will go to war.
Within months of graduating, the cadets and midshipmen at these schools, and at the Air Force Academy and in ROTC and NROTC units across the country, will set aside their cleats and pads — and don flak jackets, combat boots and...

The Army-Navy Game was at risk of being dropped from television in the mid-1990’s ....because the media moguls felt that the game would not get the viewers necessary to generate the advertising revenues. But after 2001 - and with a nation at war, the interest in watching the game increased.
Several years ago - West Point and Annapolis were presented with a chance to increase the viewership ....typically, the first Saturday in December is the final weekend for normal collegiate games, and a number of major rivalries are held on that last weekend for these games. And of course - the Army/Navy rivalry has been one of the longest running rivalries in US history! But - someone figured that many potential viewers would choose their own college or the state university/college game as their first choice for viewing - the number of potential viewers who would watch Army/Navy as a second choice was enormous.
So ...the plan was to move “America’s Game” from the first Saturday to the 2nd Saturday in December - when there would be no competing college games ...and viewership would soar! [And - it has! ]
I look forward to watching Navy beat Army this Saturday - and a win would be the 11th time in a row for Navy...(winning all games since 2002!). Of course - Army, which is 2 and 10 this year, had a surprising route of Air Force this year, beating them more convincingly than the Navy’s squeaking by Air Force this year. Either way, it will be a great game and a continuation of a great tradition!

The man in your photo appears to be wearing MARPAT camo all right — but his cover is wrong. That is not a Marine issue LWH — it’s the Army helmet MICH pattern of, ummm, about 2004.
I know. My roommate at TBS was a defensive end for Navy. He was incensed that I failed to get in line and root for USNA. Oh well.

How about that PLEBE Quarterback....he is 6 and 1 for the 7 starts he did this year. (He replaced a Firstee who was 1 and 4 for starts he did.) I look forward to another 3 years of good quarterbacking from Reynolds!! (And maybe 3 more years of holding on to the Commander in Chief Trophy.)
BUT - in all honesty - Army played their hearts out and I applaud them for the great game. I was really concerned about Navy winning after seeing Army do such a decisive thrashing of Air Force (and Navy only squeaked by in its game with Air Force). After watching that game, I knew Navy was in for a fight ...and a fight it was. Navy got lucky with that final fumble by Army in the last minutes of the game. I felt sorry for the Army Quarterback ...really tough on him, when victory was so near ....and an end of the string of losses. Great game was played by both sides, and my hat is off to both teams!
