Does the RNC really want a corporate lobbyist as chairman?
Washington Examiner ^ | 12/6/12 | Timothy Carney

Posted on 12/07/2012 1:06:39 PM PST by Clint N. Suhks

The last few days have seen plenty of talk about former congressman J.C. Watts as RNC chairman. I liked J.C. Watts’ congressional record. He also was a good interview. He’s youngish. He’s black. All these things are in his favor.

But once he left Congress he became a K Street lobbyist for corporate clients, many of whom were asking the federal government for money. That hardly seems like the future of the GOP.

Watts’s lobbying clients include giants like AT&T, and green-energy companies lobbying for renewable-fuel standards like Syntroleum, plus government contractors like Lockheed Martin. Most of clients seem innocuous — such as NASCAR.

But still, I think a key part of the new GOP direction is going to require some populism. A K Street lobbyists — even one who claims NASCAR as a client — doesn’t seem to set that tone.

I like JC Watts, he's a good conservative, he's just not the brightest bulb in the drawer. RNC Chair would be too much for him IMHO.

“...not the brightest bulb in the drawer...”

Do you mean compared to the Republicans leading us now?

Frankly, I like this guy and I wished he didn’t retire.

I do like what Watts said in 2008, paraphrased ‘small business is all business’, meaning Republicans should stand up for all businesses.

"I liked J.C. Watts’ congressional record. He also was a good interview. He’s youngish. He’s black. All these things are in his favor."

We will never free ourselves of racism. Now, it's racism against whites. Try this one out and see if it would pass the racism test?

"I liked Paul Ryan's congressional record. He also was a good interview. He’s youngish. He’s white. All these things are in his favor."

As for Watts, no thanks. He voted Obama in 2008.

Why not? It’s the GOP, after all.

My first choice is the same guy I supported when Michael Steele was chosen.

Ken Blackwell.

Blackwell would have been much better than Steele, and also better than Watts, IMO. (I liked JC Watts when he was in Congress, but he's hasn't been pro-active in speaking out for conservative causes since leaving, and flirting with voting for Obama in 2008 was the last straw for me) Blackwell would also be far preferable to Prebius. He may have done a good job as Wisconsin GOP chair, but has been a total bust as RNC Chair.

But one thing the GOP really needs to do, is not play "me too" politics. The media just ridiculues the GOP for putting in a black guy as chairman because the RATs elected a black President. It's like how Keyes was selected as U.S. Senate nominee against Obama for the same reason. We shouldn't be playing catchup with the RATs. They've buried the historical fact that the first black Congressman, Senator, Ambassador, etc., etc. were all Republicans. When a minority is the best qualified person we need to aggressively work to get them in power, not play catch up the RATs and look like we're only "only selecting a black" because they did so.

I see there's some other thread now saying Nikki Haley is going to appoint Henry McMaster to US Senate instead of Tim Scott. That's a blown opporunity to have a prominent black conservative leader in the Senate, Scott is certainly better known than McMaster. Same thing earlier this year when former Miss America Erika Harold was passed over for Tim Johnson's house seat, in favor of the lesser known Rodney Davis. Davis is a pretty reliable conservative so it's a "gain" on our side over the moderate Johnson, but it was a missed opportunity to have a dynamic rising conservative star in that seat.

Calling J.C. Watts a corporate lobbyist is like calling Lech Walesa an unemployed electrician.

The real question to ask is “does the DNC really want a Marxist for President”?

It looks like the answer is duh!

Didn’t JC make vague pro-bama comments in 2008?

No, anyone would not be better! Have you forgotten Michael Steele?
