Springfield gun maker Smith & Wesson announces record sales

Smith & Wesson has announced record sales for its most recent quarter.

Net sales from continuing operations for the second quarter were a record $136.6 million, up 48 percent from the second quarter last year, according to a news release issued this week.

It was the second consecutive quarter of record sales.

The company employs more than 1,200 workers at its factory and headquarters on Roosevelt Avenue.

Federal background checks for gun purchasers were up over Black Friday. Many observers say that's because gun buyers fear that a re-elected President Barack Obama will impose more gun restrictions. But Smith & Wesson has pointed to a long-term upward trend in gun ownership driven by people wanting to get into shooting as a sport and a hobby.

Smith & Wesson said the increase was led by continued strong sales across all of the company's firearm product lines, including M&P-branded products, such as pistols, modern sporting rifles and the recently launched Shield pistol designed for concealed carry and personal protection.

Record sales ?

I love records !

Especially high caliber ones.

Should I look in the 'pop' section of my local record store ?

Now is as good a time to ask as any... What is everyone’s favorite Smith & Wesson firearm? Maybe I ought to be considering a S&W purchase in the near future? Presently, the only S&W I own is a nickle 8” Model 29. Love that thing, but is there something else the company is putting out that deserves a close look? Thx, everybody! BLOAT!

M&P in S&W's own .40.

Unstoppable.

Thanks. Just checked Bud’s and everyone loves them. I saw two models over there, one of them described as having “No mag safety,” which is by far the most popular model of the two offered by Bud’s. Only five dollars difference in the prices, too, just peanuts.

But magazine safety? What the heck is that? I have a bunch of pistols and none of them have a “magazine safety;” you just push a button and the magazine drops out. Going to the gun shop in a few days anyway. I’ll check ‘em out while I’m there. They look real good. Not too expensive either. I already own a Browning .40, but another .40 definitely wouldn’t hurt! Thx!

Sorry about the safety question. Should've googled it first. From Wiki:
California passed legislation in 2006 requiring magazine disconnects on all new handgun designs sold in the state starting January 1, 2007, which has resulted in their widespread availability in other jurisdictions as well. The arguments in favor of a magazine disconnect are that if the gun cannot fire without a magazine, then an accidental discharge can be prevented if someone removes the magazine but forgets that a round has been chambered. Also, if losing possession of the firearm is imminent, the operator can render the firearm useless by removing the magazine.
Leave it to liberals to screw up a wet dream. Never saw more improbable reasons applied to a gun safety "idea" in my life. Don't know who said it but they were 110% correct: "Liberals don't have ideas, they only have brain farts."

Imagine what their sales would be if they made guns as well as the ones they made 40 years ago. Maybe their CQ has improved, but they really damaged their brand with a lot of low-grade crap.

I believe a mag safety keeps the gun from firing if the magazine falls out or isn't properly seated. IOW - if you are in a scuffle for your life and have one in the tube, but the magazine is dislodged, the round will not fire.

I guess there's two ways to look at it under some circumstances - if in a fight for the gun and you win, you might not be able to fire it///if you lose, but manage to dump the mag, the perp can't fire. I prefer to be able to fire, mag or no mag (my revolvers work just fine without a magazine...)

You won't go wrong with a M&P.

I've passed thousands of rounds through mine without failure. It shoots while completely dirty, uses cheap ammo ... or expensive too.

Smith nailed the ergonomics too, the feel is exceptional.
