TOKYOA 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck northeastern Japan on Friday afternoon, unnerving residents in a region hit last year by a devastating quake and nuclear accident.
No deaths were directly caused by the earthquake, but one person was seriously injured and 10 suffered minor injuries, according to the National Police Agency.
The quake at 5:18 p.m. was centered off Miyagi prefecture, the same area as the massive March 11, 2011, 9-magnitude quake that devastated the region and left more than 18,000 dead or missing. The Japan Meteorological Agency said the latest quake could be considered an aftershock of that and was the biggest since July 10 when another 7.3-magnitude struck along the same fault line.

Is this a second one or a report on the first one that happened earlier today?

Happened 0800 UTC Dec 17. Now 0200 UTC Dec 18.
Not sure why some sources are just getting it out.
I did a search and didn’t find any thread,...and I wasn’t aware of any thing else....
Happened 0800 UTC Dec 17. Now 0200 UTC Dec 18.
Can you translate to central time? Are those dates right? I assume you mean 7th and 8th.
Your thread contains far more information and background, and is not a duplicate.
No harm, no foul, good job.

I was not implying that it was a duplicate post. Just that I saw that a quake was reported early this morning on FNC and wondering if this was a second event?
DOH! yes, that’s 7th and 8th, not 17 and 18

Earthquake overview : A massive M7.3 earthquake struck the Honshu, Japan coast , but luckily far out in the sea. Tsunami alert for 1 prefecture and more tsunami advisories for other prefectures was issued
Update 22:51 UTC : Aftershocks keep raging almost continuously in the greater epicenter area. They have a tendency to get gradually weaker, but now and then a major 6.X is still a possibility
Update 17:21 UTC : FDMA Japan, the agency dealing with rescue and relief all over Japan is reporting that 9 people were registered with various wounds. 8 were slightly injured, 1 seriously
Update 16:42 UTC : Since the mainshock, strong to very strong aftershocks keep shaking the epicenter area in the ocean. As this is far out the coast (+200 km) and relatively shallow, only the heavier aftershocks will be felt at the coast. On our monitors we see still a lot of Japanese people online, which may indicate that they cant sleep as it is in the middle of the Japanese night.
Instead of pingin ya back, I decided to jerk ya with a jolt! Happy Friday and I hope everyone in Japan is ok...
