Why did nurse at Kate Middleton’s hospital kill herself?
Washington Post ^ | 12/09/2012 | Delia Lloyd

LONDON — It’s the million-dollar question, and not only here in the U.K. Jacintha Saldana — one of the nurses taken in by the prank phone call to the hospital where Catherine, duchess of Cambridge, was being treated for acute morning sickness — killed herself early Friday. And we are all left scratching our heads. Why did she do it?

Of course, the first thing we all wonder is about her mental stability. We’d all desperately like to believe that this hard-working mother of two, who commuted 140 miles to her day job, often working double shifts so that she could spend more time with her family — must have some deep, dark secret to hide. Because then the rest of us could at least explain away an event that is, as the chairman of King Edward VII Hospital put it, “tragic beyond words.”

But from what we know, there is no sign that Saldana was suicidal, unstable or psychologically frail before she took her own life this week. Shy and nervous? Yes. But so depressed she was suicidal? Doesn’t sound right, at least according to those who knew Saldana, who was described at work as “an excellent nurse, well-respected and popular with all of her colleagues.”

Maybe she faced some kind of severe sanction from the hospital where she worked? Maybe the hospital blamed her for falling for a hoax in which two Australian DJs masquerading as Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles managed to fool the diligent but non-native English speaker, who subsequently passed the phone call on to the Duchess’s private nurse, who then revealed details about the duchess’s condition?

I guess because of the extreme sensativity of others we are now going to have to outlaw extremely mild practical jokes.

Could be, could be.

There was a story about Clintonista George Stephanopoulos. In college, his buddies had his number. Steffi phones in a pizza order for a boys-night-in, and one of them sneaks off, calls the joint, and changes the order.

When the pizzas' delivered and paid for, Steffi goes nuts for 1.) not getting what he "ordered", and 2.) for getting grief from his homies for not being able to place a simple pizza order.

Some people are just more tightly wound than others. Obviously, Stephanopoulos got over his inability to function in a disjoint reality, working for Dems, Clinton, and the LSM.

We don’t care because there are so many tragic deaths in this world we don’t need to focus in on this one in particular. What makes this newsworthy? It’s only fodder for speculation or conspiracy theories. I dont’ even find any sense of irony here. It’s just a parody of life remotely interesting to some and thus marketed as news because of it’s pecular timing.

I think she killed herself because she had to drive 140 miles for work each shift.

A Brit I was once working with told me that for most Brit’s the most unwanted emotion was embarrassment. So I think it’s very possible that this drove this woman to suicide.

Agreed. That “prank” turned out to be really, really stupid. No excuse for that kind of behavior.

?

What? In retrospect?

Just who do these royals think they are that they can get that kind of response from the public? They were born with a silver spoon and the rest of the world has to drop down and worship. And failing to do that kill themselves?

Please.

what may seem funny to you may not be funny to others. I am NOT for any form of censorship, I just wish people would think about how their actions could affect others. I do not believe that is too much to ask of anyone. This was done in an effort to receive notoriety, did they not consider for ONE moment about the person who would end up being the butt of their mild practical joke?

For a woman >> You don’t kill yourself when you have two children that seem perfectly good and normal. She had them to live for if nothing else. So very selfish of her but she was probably very deprressed (for whatever reason) previous to the prank phone call

I mean....Even Prince Charles joked about it yesterday. Blaming the Australian pranksters is wrong but the nanny staters and feminazis are out in full force on this one.

The hospital management should have been more diligent-—perhaps issuing a detailed memo-—advising staff of its policies WRT the admittance of royals.

No one could have forseen the nasty prank-—but staff could have been on high alert WRT the privacy Kate should have received.

I believe US hospitals—— without royal patients——rarely give out info over the phone-—even to a patient’s relatives.

Actions have consequences, they should be held accountable. How bout that little girl who commited suicide because of facebook taunts, WHERE has civility gone?

Pranks are a guy thing....of course humorless women want calm and order and perfect decorum. This prank was a hoot. Too bad about the suicide and I’m sure the DJs would take it all back if they could.

I guess I blame the humorless nurse for depriving her family of a wife and mother

To make things worse for this poor woman, she was still learning English and British culture. And therefore; in no way, could she have distinguished one British accent from another British accent. As an American, I could not have either

That's because you are American. Educated Middle class Indians have a better understanding of British culture than Americans.

Besides, she had been living and working in England for 12 years.

That was an extended affair of bullying that I would punish myself. A one time telephone prank is 180 degrees different

I think the Brits are covering up what happened to her at the hospital after the hoax & deflecting the blame onto the Aussie radio radio station & the disc jockeys. Yes, they started it, but I think the hospital, British media & British gov’t run healthcare system are what pushed her over the edge.

It was too overwhelming after the stern lecture on the vagueries of the Brit Equivalent of HIPA violations. Healthcare fixes BLAME...not PROBLEMS

“... killed herself over such a silly mistake”.

Something odd happened to me a few weeks ago that keeps popping into mind over this incident. I was food shopping and there was a woman in the store. Her purse fell, the contents spilled all over the floor and she just burst into tears. Hard, relentless tears and sobs. I walked over to her and started picking up the items and shoving them back into her purse. I kept saying, “It’s okay... we’ll get everything into your purse. Don’t worry”. I was confused at her severe reaction to such a simple nuisance. She told me finally she was sorry but her husband was just put into Hospice and reality finally hit her that her life was about to change. My point with this story is the dropping of the purse and the reaction didn’t have much to do with each other. I have the feeling that the British woman had more issues going on in her personal life and perhaps this crank call incident was the final straw that pushed her over the edge (that she may have been teetering on). IMHO.

In the US if you give out information to someone who is not allowed to have it it is a violation of federal law (HIPA). At my former hospital anyone looking at an electronic chart of a patient that you are not taking care of you are terminated. In fact when a RN is involved you can actually lose your license to practice nursing. While this is no reason why I would off myself, I have to believe that in Socialist England she was days away from losing her job. Considering that, and then being the Nurse who made the mistake concerning the Royal family, her prospects were not good in gaining another job. Imagine being a nurse in America and you are taking care of Michelle Obama and you give out private information concerning her over the radio. You would be in violation of Federal law, lose your job and possibly your career and be known as the Nurse who revealed her info over the radio. Again I would not off myself, but my career would be toast. This is not just a practical joke. Just another perspective from a retired RN. Thanks.

My own opinion of practical jokers is that they should be hung by their toes, and by ‘toes’, I mean balls.

I worked in a union plant long ago. They were the worst people on earth for this sort of thing. One thing I did learn, though, is that massive and disproportionate retaliation works. Israel, take note.

I didn’t know who the guilty parties were, although I had suspicions. But after I was through, the practical jokes stopped, and stayed stopped.

Give war a chance.
