A former U.S. Marine who served in Iraq and Afghanistan has been chained to a bed in a Mexican prison since August. Jon Hammar faces up to 12 years in a Mexican jail on what may be a trumped-up charge of possessing an illegal shotgun. Customs officials had already cleared the shotgun before he entered Mexico.
On August 23, Hammar and his friend Ian McDonough were en route to Costa Rica on a surfing vacation when they ran into trouble after crossing the Mexican border.
According to McClatchy newspapers, Hammer brought a six-decade-old shotgun into Mexico, which his mother referred to as a glorified BB gun, that was passed down to him by his grandfather.
McDonough said the Customs and Border Protection Agent said, All you have to do is register the gun, and gave them a registration paper to give to the Mexican authorities.
When Hammar gave the registration form to the Mexican agents, he and McDonough were immediately taken into custody and Mexican prosecutors looked at the disassembled relic in the 1972 Winnebago motor home and dismissed the U.S. registration papers Hammar had filled out, charging Hammar with the serious crime of possession of a weapon restricted for use to Mexicos armed forces:

This is an outrage! This would never have happened with Reagan in charge!
This guy if F#@*#D, the only way he would have got out of that third world s@#t hole of a corruptocracy would have been to lock and load and fight his way out. No firearms in mehico for any reason at all, even if they agreed to it through their consulate or their embassy for legal hunting purposes.
The entire country is full of nothing but grifters, criminals and narcos.
When is the treatment of American citizens in Mexico and their rights vs US treatment of Mexicans going to be an issue when we discuss amnesty ?
Ever hear of reciprocal aggrements ? These are arranged to protect the rights of American citizens working or living in other countries.
Why is it when it comes to citizens of other countries we are required to offer them the same privledges as we do to US citizens? But when it comes to US citizens who get in trouble or attempt to do business in other countries they do not get the same treatment their citizens get.
Americans cant own coast land in Mexico. And get no title to it elsewhere. If they run out of cash theyll get unceremoniously sent back or put in jail untill some relative comes up with the fresh. Thats just for starters as for granting them voting privledges yea lets give Mexican citizens that right when American citizens vote in their elections .
If he’s white, Obama and Holder won’t be bothered. Additionally, Mexico enforces their laws when in comes to foreigners and their trumped up crimes.
He is in a tough situation and there are lessons to be learned, first and foremost is that the protection of the Second Amendment does not extend into Mexico and when authorities in third world nations demand money in exchange for your freedom, you should pay and do not ever call US authorities.
A deal will be worked out to get this guy out of that Mexican jail, but the price will be much higher than the $1800 that was demanded when he was first arrested.

You’re right. Some very important mexican criminals need their payoffs, and it won’t be cheap. I’m guessing $50,000 or more will be needed to spring him from this hellhole. If someone can get to the jailer at midnight and pay him to turn his back might be doable for a lot less. But then you have a risky race to the border.

Yup. Calling US authorities is a waste of time. As far as the US govt. is concerned, once you leave the country you are totally on your own. They won’t lift a finger to help you.
There are signs EVERYWHERE stating that firearms are not allowed into Mexico in the possession of any non-Mexican. The only folks I ever see there with weapons are the Federales and the local cops.
Just because this guy is a veteran does NOT exempt him from the rules.
Sorry buddy, but don’t do the crime if you can’t do the time.
(Mexico *IS* a foreign land, with its own laws)

That aint all. If you are convicted of a felony in another
country you loose your rights here as if you were convicted
in the U.S. I think that was a republican sponsored law to.
