Those same polls show an even higher percentage supporting cuts in spending.

Until you get into specifics (cut SS, cut Medicare, etc?), when you'll find majorities for cutting nothing beyond foreign aid, which is ultimately a negligible portion of expenditures.

That’s why the GOP should cast it as ‘balanced’ cuts, drawing a line in the sand that they be $XB, for this year and projected, say that X% must come from discretionary, X% from defense, and X% from entitlement reform. They should also lay out their specifics, but declare themselves open to negotiations with Obama and the Dems as to the specifics within those broader parameters.
