Which is evil: Guns or gun control?

CALIFORNIA December 10, 2012 – The tragedy of viciously taking another person’s life is always difficult to understand. But to appear noble and use these tragedies for ideological gain only cheapens the life that was lost. In the high profile murder/suicide case of Jovan Belcher of the NFL Kansas City Chiefs, the complex debate over gun control exploded on cue just like after the Aurora shooting incident (see my article here).

To reduce the number of violent murders, the real culprit must be identified. If it’s purely a matter of a weapon’s existence, then severely limiting their availability or banning them entirely would make sense. In fact, many see guns as equivalent to a flesh eating virus needing to be eradicated at all costs. Others see gun ownership as a fundamental right never to be infringed. Obviously, until a principled, objective and fact based dialogue occurs, any mutual appreciation of a gun’s value and dangers will remain elusive.

Not surprisingly, some Biblical principles help us to understand how to approach guns. First, weapons are never condemned as intrinsically evil; they’re inanimate objects incapable of independent action, just like bricks, razor blades or poison. Second, the devil (John 8:44) and man’s wicked heart (Jeremiah 17:9) are the authors of evil actions, not the weapons they use. Third, unjustified killing is consistently condemned (Exodus 20:13; 1 Timothy 1:8-10). Interestingly, the very first murder in the Bible has all three of these principles present, with God severely judging Cain, not the rock, stick, or hands he used to kill Abel (Genesis 4:8-11). Lastly, we clearly have the right and the duty to protect ourselves and our families, even by lethal means if necessary (Exodus 22:2-3; Luke 11:21).

Gun control is mostly an attempt to gain power through a false agenda. To many, it appeals by removing individual responsibility.

Guns can’t be evil. They are inanimate objects.

It’s the predators that are evil. And guns are good for killing predators.

Marxist Regimes tend to emplace gun control, right before the mass executions. Luckily we are a democracy.

Marxism is evil, and has cause the murder of over one hundred million people in the twentieth century. So lets make Marxism illegal.

I think his example needs to be examined further. That is, while the football player committed the violent acts, to a great extent for many years he was brought up to be both violent and aggressive—a common thing among football players.

In his case, even in high school he was a violent bully, and his football training in no way diminished that, in fact, it probably heightened it. Such men can’t be expected to just “turn it off”, and even during football games the occasional player goes on a small violent rampage of “unnecessary roughness.”

So instead of focusing on either the gun or the individual, I see him as the end product of aggression conditioning, just like a pit bull dog used for dog fighting. While the dog might be naturally aggressive, it is the fault of its trainers when it loses control.

Remove all guns from the law-abiding public and only politicians and criminals will have access to them.

Then take a look at Switzerland where there is a gun in almost every home. Of course, the Swiss are extremely blessed by not being a member of the fascist UN.

Too profound a statement for the general public to comprehend.

Evil are those that relentlessly work to shred our constitution.

Evil are those that would rather I simply fall, without defense, at the hands of others that would want to kill me or my loved ones.

No, he was not conditioned to kill. First of all women don’t play football, mostly, and for good reason. More importantly, despite you pressing your thumb on the scale by citing “unnecessary roughness” if players are taught one thing it’s to keep it between the whistle. Penalties can hurt your chances at winning more reliably than anything besides turnovers. The Raiders of previous decades and the Saints recently are exceptional.

Which isn’t to say violence and football don’t go together. Obviously they do. But it’s more a matter of violent people being attracted to it and excelling at it. And imagine what they’d heeling instead. Not baking cookies. Sports give them a relatively safe outlet, plus teach them some level of discipline.

If there’s a problem, and there is, it’s in the entitled, pampered attitude undue fame, money, adulation, and attention being good at ballgames can get you. We tend to shelter them from mistakes and overpraised the for what are truly insignificant achievements. I realize people value them, and there’s money to be made. But it doesn’t have to free them from all consequence, be it impregnating a girl, beating someone up, or what have you.

Or maybe this easily just another “domestic” murder, or just another murder period, and doesn’t mean any more than any other.

just substitute any other tool in place of “gun”. Hammer. Knife. Scalpel. Laser. Drill. Saw. Fork. Hand weight. Soda can.

You soon realize anything can be a deadly weapon, all that is required at evil intent. INTENT is everything, because millions of people carry every day and they don’t murder anyone.
