BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — A resident shot an alleged robber Tuesday morning in east Bakersfield, according to the Kern County Sheriff's Office.

The resident heard someone remove a screen and break a kitchen window to gain access to his home, so the resident armed himself with a handgun, the sheriff's office said.

The suspect and resident came face to face in the hallway of the East Brundage Lane home, and the resident shot the suspect at least twice in the upper body.

The alleged intruder, 26-year-old Arturo Jose Luis Estrada, got out of the house and stumbled about a half block down the sidewalk before collapsing. That's where deputies found him.

Judas Priest, these stupid journalists don’t know the difference between a robber and a burglar. A burglar breaks and enters into a dwelling house with intent to commit a felony. A robber uses force to remove property from a person. This guy was a burglar. If, when encountering a person he then uses force to steal, he becomes a robber. In this case, he is a failed burglar.

If I were choosing homes to rob, I’d not choose any in Bakersfield.

Had the "alleged intruder" been of a different demographic, this is how it would have been written.

The distinction tends to break down when the miscreant breaks into an occupied home. I suspect this fellow is just a really bad burglar rather than a really stupid robber, but it can be hard to be certain.

A happy ending and this time the authorities have the job of cleaning up the mess. I’d rather fix a broken window than mop up the fetid goop of incorrigible scum.

Bakersfield is the county seat in Kern County. Kern County is the most prolific issuer of ccw’s (CA is may-issue) in the state. If you are running for sheriff, you can’t get elected without campaigning to continue to issue ccw’s. Kern is effectively shall-issue. We have a huge gun culture here with an exceptionally high number of armed citizens.

Good point. Still most burglars think nobody is at home. Still, in this case, there was nothing to support the bad guy being a robber. And I have heard people say “robbed a house” lol

Now, there are kidnappers that commit burglary on the way in to get their victim. But most burglars don’t expect to see people at home.

The resident, whose name was withheld, was detained at the scene for questioning and released pending further investigation

All together now. He came at me and said he was going to kill me.

What is this "gun culture" that you write?
