Amazing. Apparently Detroit is now 18th in population size and smaller than Columbus, OH and Ft. Worth, TX. It will soon be passed by El Paso and Memphis (which have already passed Boston in population).
Maybe Detroit and Columbus should swap baseball teams.?
This isn't an oversimplification. People actually think this.
Co-worker of mine used to rail and rave about the owners of our company. ....For the moment, we'll ignore the fact that he was paid a fair wage for a week's work, with benefits, vacation, sick leave, 401K, etc etc etc and was fully capable of leaving at any time for a new job.... Setting those bits aside, he was fond of making the comment: "They take every bit of the profits and just leave us the scraps!"
He was ALSO fond of saying that "We need to stick it to those rich bastards. They NEED to pay their fair share!" ...Taking every bit of their profits and leaving them with only the scraps, I suppose.
The irony is endless. IMHO, it all boils down to which one's hand is holding the whip. :-)
Rome had a Senate, tribunes, consuls etc to the end. They went through the motions of doing their ancient duties, when in reality they existed to rubber-stamp the diktats of the emperor. He kept senators wealthy and they more or less gladly did his bidding. Rich and alive beats dead every time.
We are very near the same situation. Congressional hearings that deal with major issues have been replaced by “talks” among party leaders. The world's once most deliberative body is a petty collection of demagogues whose interest goes no further than continuance of their wealth and noble status.
Hussein and his despotic successors will never get rid of Congress or the courts; they are/will be essential to sanction and legitimize the coming hard tyranny.
As in the Roman empire, we maintain the outward structure of a republic.
That poor beautiful house, a shame.
Hard to believe that just fifty years ago when I went to boot camp the boys from Detroit proudly said so as one might say,”I am royalty”. They were very disdainful of us poor Southern boys.

I have some Dem friends for whom things were “just not fair!” It was fair that they made more money than me, but it wasn’t fair that other people made more money than they did. I think a great many Dem voters abide by that screwy philosophy. Someone is doing better than they are (even if, like my friends, they’re doing very well), and IT’S JUST NOT FAIR!!! I remember one time one of my friends going on about the unfairness of professional athletes making millions playing a game. I asked him if he’d feel guilty making that kind of money. He replied: “why should I feel guilty?”

How long before Memphis overtakes Detroit on the list of most violent cities?
