John Hickenlooper on Colorado gun control laws: 'The time is right'

DENVER (AP) — Colorado's Gov. John Hickenlooper said "the time is right" for state lawmakers to consider gun control measures, offering his firmest stance in the aftermath of several high-profile shootings, including a movie theater rampage in suburban Denver, that have shocked the nation.

The Democratic governor upset some in his party for not taking a stronger position when he said last summer that stricter laws would not haven't prevented the mass shooting in Aurora.

In an interview with The Associated Press on Wednesday, Hickenlooper said that the legislative session in January would be an appropriate time to take up a debate on gun control in his state.

"I wanted to have at least a couple of months off after the shooting in Aurora to let people process and grieve and get a little space, but it is, I think, now is the time is right," Hickenlooper said.

The comments also come after a mass shooting at an Oregon mall and a murder-suicide involving a professional football player this month touched off a national debate over gun laws.

Hickenlooper said the issues that merit discussion include "things like, do we all need assault weapons?" which he said are "designed for warfare" and "designed to pierce bulletproof vests and body armor."

Former neuroscience graduate student James Holmes is charged with killing 12 people and wounding 70 others in the July movie shootings. He has been in jail since the attack and has not entered a plea in the case ...

Hickenlooper did not call for specific legislation, but did give a strong indication of what kind of debates and proposals

"When you look at what happened in Aurora, a great deal of that damage was from the large magazine on the AR-15 (rifle). I think we need to have that discussion

Hickenlooper needs to spend more time at one end of the range.

Nobody is arguing that "we all need assault weapons." It's not even a question of "need." It would be okay with me if citizens had them, and police didn't. They could borrow mine if they gave me a good enough reason, and so long as they actually give it back when they're done.

which he said are "designed for warfare" and "designed to pierce bulletproof vests and body armor."

If that's the standard, then there sure are a lot of hunting rifles that will also be banned. Sorry, no can do.

What bothers me is that those !#@$%&! “biters” from California are starting to wander into Arizona. Phoenix is starting to look like the set of the Walking Dead.

"in Aurora"

I thought Aurora was already part of Mexico.

Upon further reflection, so is California; so it all makes sense.

"Hickenlooper was born in Narberth, Pennsylvania, just outside of Philadelphia, "

So, it's bad genes.

We had an absolute disaster here in 2010. The official pubbie candidate turned out to have “padded” his resiume beyond all reality. I think he got 9%. Tom Tancredo jumped in at the last moment, but too little, too late, too zany. Jane Norton refused to run through the caucus, thus forcing Ken buck into a damaging, long, and expensive primary that she lost after the damage was done so numbnut Bennett won by ~4%. In short, a complete meltdown that we have not recobvered from yet.

The time is right........for freedom loving Americans to stockpile firearms and ammunition like there is no freaking tomorrow. AK’s, AR’s, and about 20 mags each. Seriously, it is PAST TIME to lock and load.

Ex-Denver mayor

And he was still just a brewery owner before I left Denver.

Put it on the ballot, he would lose big time.

Not so sure. Before I left in 2004, the last gun-related ballot item was either prop 22 or 23, the "gun show prop". IIRC, that didn't work out so well.

Dickinpooper was a dumbass, and a hypocritical one at that when he was our Denver mayor...

He employed an illegal alien at one of his brew pubs who cowardly shot in the back of the head and killed a Denver Police Officer while the officer was working security at a social event ...

Now after being “kicked upstairs” to the governor’s office, he decides it’s time to hit the citizens of Colorado with “gun control”...

He’s reflective of the sorry state of Colorado politics in general...Get outside of Denver/Boulder area and some pockets of Leftard concentrations mainly around ski areas, Colorado is a great state to live in...

He and his ilk are (Salazar for example) are reflective of what Colorado is becoming...The Calicommification of Colorado continues apace...It’s spreading like a virus and no end in sight...

Hickenlooper was born in Narberth, Pennsylvania, just outside of Philadelphia,

Mayor Hickenlooper was a member of the Mayors Against Illegal Guns Coalition, an organization formed in 2006 and co-chaired by New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg ?

Remember the Hickenlooper illegal alien employee who killed a Denver police officer ? Raul Gomez Garcia (aka as Raul Garcia Gomez) then fled back to Mexico with the help of friends and relatives who helped hide him on his journey back to Mexico.

Hickenlooper apparently had many illegals [ hundreds ? ] with fake social security cards, etc.. Gomez used forged forms of identification to obtain work. Gomez killed the officer a few hours after he left work.

Gomez had been stopped three times by police for traffic violations, yet remained in the United States.

Apparently, Hickenlooper never met with the widow nor the fatherless children.

There is a story about a gun range for the Denver PD that had to jump through a bunch of Chickenpooper hoops mostly phony environmental issues several times to get it built.

What the hell were Coloradoans thinking when they elected this pinhead? He’s a moron.

Tom Tancredo came within a few points of beating him running on the Constitution party ticket. The goofball republican Dan Maes only got 10% of the "can't vote for anybody but the R" types.

Tom Tancredo was an excellent 3 term congresscritter in case you don't remember him. He ran for president in 08 too.

You got it. Over the last few years Colorado has become little Californicate because of all the transplants. And like whores and addicts, they bring their bad habits with them. Pity the poor original residents that foolishly welcomed the trash.
