DENVER (AP) Colorado's Gov. John Hickenlooper said "the time is right" for state lawmakers to consider gun control measures, offering his firmest stance in the aftermath of several high-profile shootings, including a movie theater rampage in suburban Denver, that have shocked the nation.
The Democratic governor upset some in his party for not taking a stronger position when he said last summer that stricter laws would not haven't prevented the mass shooting in Aurora.
In an interview with The Associated Press on Wednesday, Hickenlooper said that the legislative session in January would be an appropriate time to take up a debate on gun control in his state.
"I wanted to have at least a couple of months off after the shooting in Aurora to let people process and grieve and get a little space, but it is, I think, now is the time is right," Hickenlooper said.
The comments also come after a mass shooting at an Oregon mall and a murder-suicide involving a professional football player this month touched off a national debate over gun laws.
Hickenlooper said the issues that merit discussion include "things like, do we all need assault weapons?" which he said are "designed for warfare" and "designed to pierce bulletproof vests and body armor."
Former neuroscience graduate student James Holmes is charged with killing 12 people and wounding 70 others in the July movie shootings. He has been in jail since the attack and has not entered a plea in the case ...
Hickenlooper did not call for specific legislation, but did give a strong indication of what kind of debates and proposals
"When you look at what happened in Aurora, a great deal of that damage was from the large magazine on the AR-15 (rifle). I think we need to have that discussion

I grew up thinking Colorado as full of rugged miners, cowboys, mountain men, and the Red Ryder comic-strip character (whose creator was from there).
It’s jarring (to put it mildly) to now associate the state with left-wing gun-grabbing politicians and dopehead hippie scum.
Its about time for those good folks to be re-stocking and getting backups to their primary weapons and some for others who may be in need.
My 500 .45 ACP rounds will arrive tomorrow. Getting another 500 next payday.

Dickenlooper (as he is also known) was a bar owner downtown Denver and he ran on a protest to an increase in the cost of parking meters in front of his bar. Ran on that protest. Unbelievably, he won. I think we had 12 democrats (zero pubbies) to pick from and he was the prime choice of the dogmeat available.
He and his live-in have a daughter, I believe, but I don’t think they have ever bothered to make her legal.
My Brother lives there. Avid Gun Collector and Conceal Carry Permit holder. He moved there 35 Years ago from California and always gave me hard time about staying behind.
I told him years ago that Colorado would end up going Blue and he didn’t think that would ever be possible. Even after the idiots there Elected Rats, he still told me the Rats were Conservative Gun Rights supporters.
Now we see what’s what, and he finally does too.
Hickenlooper has long prided himself on being a moderate who tries to forge compromises between Republicans and Democrats.
He's long on pride, short on intelligence and accomplishments. Denver elected him. Colorado is stuck with him.
Should have also mentioned he is heavily involved with the Gang of Four and the Tides Foundation...
May indicate to all who John Hickenlooper is...
A poster boy for the loopy left posing as a moderate...
I pray that youre using cash to buy that ammo..
We just lost a whole family of Conservatives(from Pa.) to Colorado. Pennsylvania was not that liberal, we’re being inundated with them from N.J. & N.Y.
The smarter folks from the northeast come here too. I am seeing the big city followers of the Won. I mentioned Pennsylvania because in the last month or so I have worked on lots of cars with current inspection stickers from there, and fresh CO plates. My six bay shop is not a scientific sample.
Tell your friends we appreciate the good that offsets the loons. I wish they, like me, were not outnumbered.
Yea, sad we lost them to you, but like you said, doubt it makes any difference.
There are some details from about a month ago in the piece behind the link below. Too bad that the thread party already moved on. Don’t see any new FR posts on the topic, either. Colorado politics, BTW, tend to be done in ways that are “low key” if seen at all, to put it subtly.

Going to be interesting how things turn out. I see the Dim from Boulder is also going after ARs and AKs. They ban those guns, and I see the CO Dims losing the state house and a chance to flip the state senate to R in 2014.
