WASHINGTON (AP) -- Susan Rice, the embattled U.N. ambassador, abruptly withdrew from consideration to be the next secretary of state on Thursday after a bitter, weekslong standoff with Republican senators who declared they would fight to defeat her nomination.
The reluctant announcement makes Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry the likely choice to be the nation's next top diplomat when Hillary Rodham Clinton departs soon.

And Kerry will become “embattled” again. People have not forgotten about him, to be sure.
I’ve got to admit, I wouldn’t mind seeing old horseface gone from the Senate.
In the end.....it will be Chuck Hagel as Sec Def and a left (and I mean LEFT FIELD) selection for SOS who comes from academia. Kerry doesnt want this mess.

Actually better this way. If Rice had won, ‘Herman Munster’ Kerry would have been nominated for Sec. of Defense.
John Kerry already has experience with dealing with Commmunists , he met with the Viet Cong during the Viet nam war. Nothing like putting a traitor and war criminal as Secretary of State.
I would bet that John McCain will say what a wondeful guy he is, I can hear him now. “My Friend and colleague John F’in is a wonderful choice.”

Now that Republicans have "won" what I think was an imaginary battle against Rice it will be next to impossible for them to deny the S of S job to the guy I've heard may be a Vietnam veteran.
I would suspect the Kerry-Heinz is just as incompetent as Rice or Mrs. Bill .... so, for the Food Stamp President, what’s not to like. Besides he can make the cooked Rice one of his personal Czars without Senate confirmation.

Kerry is a poor choice for nearly anything, but under the circumstances he is just as harmless as SOS as a Senator. And with a bit of luck we could pick up his seat.

Once Obama finishes helping his Muslim friends sharia-ize the Middle East, the only way a female diplomat will be able to get close to a Middle Eastern leader will be by joining his harem.
