Multiple deaths reported in shooting at Connecticut elementary school

DEVELOPING: A gunman opened fire Friday inside a Connecticut elementary school, and authorities reported multiple deaths -- including the gunman -- according to CTNow.com.

Reports also said children were shot but it remains unclear whether any were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown.

Authorities said the gunman, who was not identified, is dead. An official with knowledge of the situation told the Associated Press that the man apparently had two guns.

In the aftermath of yet another senseless mass killing, instead of focusing on the killer's means it would be nice if the media would investigate the other, far more relevant common thread in these events - it seems as though most of these lunatic killers have a passing acquaintance with our mental health care system. It is clearly failing.

When the media finally gets around to interviewing people who knew the shooters, will they say, “That he could do something like this was unthinkable before today.” and “He was just as normal as the next guy. Friendly, soft-spoken and a gentleman...just an ordinary average guy.”?

Earlier reports of a second gunman are unconfirmed. The Connecticut Post reports that police are also questioning a handcuffed man in connection with the shooting. Witnesses told the newspaper he was led out of the woods by officers.

This just keeps getting worse.

awful...i’m in northern Westchester and not far from this...they are now saying 17 to 18 children were shot dead and its going to get worse....absolutely horrifying...

Most of the shooting is reported as taking place in a KINDERGARTEN classroom.

27 dead (including a gunman), 18 children, and an entire classroom of kids missing.

Not hearing anything about multiple gunman, just the one.

so, so sad....my daughter is 9YO...i’m thinking about the loss of those children, especially during the holiday season...watching the local reports here in NY- i am sick to my stomach...

they are now saying the shooter had ties to the school...

i am 40 minutes from Newton, Ct...watching local reports and there was a suspicious van at the scene and the driver is in custody...they said the situation in NJ is a possible relative of the shooter who may have knowledge of the situation....shooter evidently had ties to the school...

I’m in Putnam County about 20 minutes from the scene. I just heard the same thing too. Now I just possibly .223 cal AR-15 may have been used.
