Boehner Caves: Speaker John Boehner pitches millionaire tax hike

Speaker John Boehner has proposed allowing tax rates to rise for the wealthiest Americans if President Barack Obama agrees to major entitlement cuts, according to several sources close to the talks.

It is the first time Boehner has offered any boost in marginal tax rates for any income group, and it would represent a major concession for the Ohio Republican. Boehner suggested hiking the Bush-era tax rates for top wage earners, including those with annual incomes of $1 million or more annually, beginning Jan. 1, two sources said.

I think a lot of you are missing the sub-text of the whole negotiation: Obama said "no" to an offer that, to this independent, represents an olive branch from the Republican side. Pelosi said that Obama has made concrete offers of spending cuts (which I define as a number going down, not going up less than originally anticipated) yet I've yet to see anything in writing of such an offer. Then there is the matter of all the spending cuts that were part of the "tax now, cut later" agreements over the decades.

"Fairness" is keeping your promises.

So the obvious conclusion is that Obama is not willing to negotiate in good faith. He is instead treating this as a contest of wills, instead of considering what is best for the country.

Note that Boehner hasn't done anything more than make a counter-offer. And had it smacked down hard by the other side.

What does it matter to Obama whether the line is at a quarter million or one million? Is this a backhand slap at his union support? Or does he think that the GSA schedule is too generous to upper-echelon executive-branch employees?

The only time Bonehead exerts his raw power is against conservatives.
He never exerts his power at Obama and the democrats.

IF there is any additional revenue, you can be sure that spending growth will vastly outpace revenue growth.

Much more likely will be a reduction of revenue. Just look at the history and objective evidence of income and capital gains tax rates.

But Obama said he doesn't give a rat's patootie about revenue...he wants "fairness," ie, screw the successful white bastards out of the fruits of their labors.

Yes, it’s a contest of wills and obama is enjoying every minute of it. He thinks he has a mandate and can do as he pleases. He likes to see the Repuplicans squirm.. he thinks it makes them look weak, and him with power.

Everyone on this forum knew that he would. The only question was when.

If Hussien wants to use the checkbook, then Boehner gives him the checkbook.

"Polls" show most people want higher taxes on the rich. The MSM seems to be ignoring the part of the same polls that say just as many (and more in some polls) want the government to cut spending.

Going over the cliff will do both. I think people will accept it. If Boner chooses just the tax cuts, he's going against the will of the people who kept the Republicans in charge of the purse strings. People want BOTH.

Personally, I think only spending cuts should be on the table. Under taxation is not the problem. 50% in mandatory government fees and various taxes is MORE than enough already!

If nothing happens, tax rates go up automatically.

And why do they go up automatically?

Because of the debt ceiling deal Bonehead and the GOP signed off on two years ago.
So because the GOP cut a bad deal two years ago, means they have
to cut a worse deal now?

Change that word “rich” to “successful”. They have brainwashed the public to think the rich has so much and “you have so little”. It would make a whale of difference to me if that money would pay down the debt... but it won’t. So, why collect it...Obama will use it for his gain... not the country’s. He uses our tax money to build his kingdom... he has and he will.

They go up automatically because the original Bush tax cuts were temporary. All that happened 2 years ago was that they were extended for 2 years. There was no way Obama was ever going to sign off to make them permanent.

Get ready to pay more, because after they tax the rich, they will be coming
after the rest of us. And if u have kids, I want to thank them in advance
for working two jobs and carrying a huge tax burden to fund my future
Social Security benefits.

BINGO!

There will be NO increase in total revenue, there will be a decrease. Happens every time you raise rates.

The spineless Repubs should write the new tax law to say if total revenue decreases those who got their rates raised get them retroactively lowered and get refunds, AND spending has to decrease by DOUBLE the decrease in revenue. But that will never happen. Too logical, too fair. (Ask a Ukrainian about how they feel about letting a Marxist define what is "fair")

Ha! They may say today “Rich is more than $1M income.” What they really mean is “You’re rich if you have a paycheck.” Just watch. Deduction phase outs, dead ahead.

The arrogance of ALL the Commie Critters in Washington who want this country to go BANKRUPT.

We technically ARE already.

I don't believe that congress has the right to spend money it doesn't have. The whole house of cards will should fall soon. but it WILL fall. That's the idea, isn't it????

Secretly I've wished it to happen long age. We have no responsibility for this debt. Nor do my heirs!!!!
