I don’t think anyone should be refused the right to own weapons in self defense. But I would certainly agree that she should have kept those weapons locked up, since she had a nutcase in the house.
As for putting him away, she would have no control over him after he reached the age of 18. She couldn’t make him see an analyst or take meds, even, unless he was ready and willing to do so. Her only legal options were persuasion, or kicking him out of the house.
On the other hand, she not only failed to keep the weapons away from him, she evidently took him to the shooting range and taught him how to use them. Not a good idea for a child who was known to have severe problems and to be antisocial in the extreme.
It doesn’t end there. And, hmmm, let’s see, it shows here in the database that you are a republican. Oh! For sure you must be nuts, and hence, you no longer can vote.
Bingo! And it surprises me that a number of us are missing the point of the propaganda hit piece.
“As dark as that sounds, I know parents of mentally ill and dangerous children who think that.”
Yeah, that sounds pretty dark. I think that is the sickest post I have seen on FR in a long time. I don’t believe you know any parent that would leave their firearms out so their child would kill themselves.
What exactly is your mental problem and have you sought medical help for it?
Adam Lanza was severely mentally ill because he murdered 20 children, and 7 adults including his mother and he killed himself. Psychologically healthy people do not do things like that.
That’s where it’s going. Ever been in combat? Ever taken “meds” for depression etc?
No guns for you.
“The gov’t can’t just make up new definitions of mental illness on a whim.”
Oh really. Like that really matters. Think CPS coming in and taking your children. That is a subjective decision by a lowly gubmint employee executing government definitions.
The Bill of Rights was never meant to trump common sense.
We have the “right” to do lots of things that we really ought not.
Were Mrs. Lanza alive today, could see what her son did, and could turn the clock back, I think it’s safe to say she would lock those guns up.
Most mothers of mentally ill children are in some sort of denial as to how mentally ill their children are.
Perhap it is wishful thinking more than denial.
“Were Mrs. Lanza alive today, could see what her son did, and could turn the clock back, I think its safe to say she would lock those guns up.”
You don’t know the firearms weren’t locked up. He killed her for a reason and he tried to buy his own gun earlier in the week.
We don’t know the full story.
He allegedly posted his intentions on 4Chan.* He said "I'm going to kill myself tomorrow and it's going to make the news. Be watching at 9am." Under that he posted the picture of Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris dead in Columbine High School. Someone then asked where he lived, and he said Connecticut.
*DO NOT GO TO 4CHAN! It's the sewer of the internet. Dead/tortured animals, pornography, snuff photos etc. Grisly and disturbing.
It seems because of her wealth he was allowed to not work, not go to school not fend for himself. Not interact at all. In fact he was not allowed to grow up. So this thing just sort of grew like some ugly mushroom. Playing violent video games reading who knows what without any male supervision. So one day this thing which never even kissed a girl slithered out and....
Wow... That escalated quickly. Love the internet! When you disagree with someone, attack them! But I understand... we are all superhero’s behind the keyboard.
Anyway, I agree with the original post to a point. She has every right to own weapons. Her mistake was, she should have kept them in a gun safe where her son couldn’t get to them. Keeping them easily accessible was a gross mistake in this case.
You know this will happen. Schools will make parents disclose whether they have a gun, what type of gun(s), store more than two weeks of food, go to Tea Party rallies. This will be “for the children” and required for registration.
Zero may have his Reichstag moment.
Perhaps he was driven to madness
by the Medical profession with PSYCHOACTIVE DRUGS.Perhaps he was using METH ?
Or the Evil ONE entered him through
the Gateway of Video Games ?Don't be so quick to JUDGE in the absence of facts.
The Media and the State Police
have changed the story more than once.
So now we will have the government decide who is mentally ill. The psychiatric and psychological societies can come up with the needed DSM diagnoses. First on the list will be conservatives, libertarians, preppers etc. Then, government agencies can prohibit gun ownership to these groups on this basis, problem solved. NOT! CW2.
add "even more so than ever along with the government."
Remember Randy and Vicki Weaver at Ruby Ridge. They prepared by moving to a remote area.. but the government found them. You see by preparing that tipped off the crack federal agents that the Preppers were part of the white supremacist movement.. oh, and that little cabin that Preppers might prepare and live in.. that becomes a compound and a danger to the U.S. Government.
The rest is history.. except the Weaver family members who were shot to death by federal employees didn't live to look back on history. And neither did a U.S. Marshals Service employee who was killed in a brief exchange of rifle fire after the U.S. Marshals Service employee (or his partner) shot and killed the Weaver's dog that discovered them hiding in the woods (IIRC without identifying themselves).
True. But they aren't all going to be committed. That would cost an enormous amount of money and would mean many legal battles.
Instead, once again media, politicals and educators talk about guns.
If mental health is the issue the response is probably going to involve a lot of interference in the lives of families like this, and that would include restricting access to firearms for such families.
This is the state tht says that if you are rich you can get the government to seize a poor man's property for you.
Some things need to be fixed.
While the gunman is thought to have acted alone, the law enforcement source said a deep dive into Lanza’s computers could provide more clues.
“You don’t know if this kid was put up to this by somebody else,” the source said. “You don’t know if there was a conspiracy of sorts. You don’t know if there wasn’t somebody who wasn’t goading this kid on.”
