If she truly was meticulous and never left the guns out, he never would have gained access to her gun safe. Remember, he tried to buy his own rifle a week earlier, but was denied. She had to have given him access to the guns. Once he had access, he shot her dead. How many mothers could ever believe their son or daughter was capable of murder?
Or maybe he killed her to get access?

My mother could and my dad could. And I believed my brother would one day kill me, until he finally was killed by the police in a “suicide by cop” scenario.
And yes, we all lived with guns in our possession. My parents at times with giving shelter to their dangerous son. Life and situations happen. There were many times I thought my parents fools, but if my brother had decided to go on a rampage in their home the only thing that would have stopped him would have been a gun.
And in the end it is what stopped him.
Now as far as the gun safe is concerned ...you make it sound like she handed him the key or combo. Or like the kid knew where to get it or find it. We don’t know that, yet. And to me, since he tried to buy a gun a week earlier ...seems to indicate he did not have ready access. So he schemed, spyed, etc. to gain access.
By all accounts, he was very intelligent. He might have deduced how to get into a safe. Breaking into a safe is something that's done all the time by criminals.
Which he was.
The worst mass murders in US history were committed without guns. Even the complete elimination of firearms in the US can't stop a determined and intelligent maniac.
