A team of golden retrievers made an 800-mile journey from the Chicago area to Newtown, Conn., over the weekend to comfort those affected by the recent school massacre.

Lutheran Church Charities deployed about 10 of the canines Saturday evening for residents who want to pet them while they talk or pray with the dog's handler, said Tim Hetzner, president of the Addison-based organization.

See how we are totally messed up!

Yeah, as a dog owner, I love dogs, but dogs will not mend someone's heart. Sure, they may slightly anesthetize someone's heart, but Jesus -- alone -- can mend the broken hearts of these people.

I am so frustrated that we are so hard of heart that we will not even attempt to seek out the only one who can heal all of our hearts.

See how we are totally messed up!

...only took seven posts to get to the curmudgeon criticizing this perfectly warm hearted attempt to soothe the broken hearted...

...do you not think these bereaved have already sought the solace of Christ in the hours since the tragedy?

Dogs are a link to draw you to God. After all DOG is GOD spelled backward (God has a great sense of humor). Did you not read that they will be with church members who will pray with the children while they are talking and petting the dogs.

Do I win a prize?

As I said, nothing wrong with this, but this is a very serious national matter and while good intentioned and a great idea, we need to move beyond the superficial, feel-good idioms that actually serve to deceive rather than solve.

I find your lack of faith disturbing.

...which is why you should’ve kept silent on this thread...

There was a flood coming and a car came and asked this man if he needed a ride to a safe place. He said, “ No, God will send my help.” It rained some more ‘till it was up to his porch, a small boat came by and they asked, “would you like a ride to a safer place?” The man answered, “No, my God will send help.” The rain kept coming by this time the man was up on his roof. A helicopter came by and asked do you need some help? The man answered again, “No, my God will send my help.”
The rain kept coming, the man drowned, died and went to heaven, when he got there he asked God, “Father, why didn’t you send me help?” God replied, “I sent you a car, a boat and a helicopter!

maybe a dog is some of that help?

Yes, and these dogs have handlers who are probably trained to help with the crisis situation. This is my denomination and I didn’t even know about the dogs until this am but you can bet the Lutheran Church Missour Synod is concerned about helping with the grief in a very meaningful way.
