Lesson Of Sandy Hook, Clackamas — Ban Gun-Free Zones
IBD EDITORIALS ^ | December 15, 2012

Gun Laws: Before the tragedy in Connecticut, a shooter at an Oregon shopping mall was stopped by an armed citizen with a concealed carry permit who refused to be a victim, preventing another mass tragedy.

In the target-rich environment of the Clackamas Town Center two weeks before Christmas, the shooter managed to kill only two people before killing himself. A far worse tragedy was prevented when he was confronted by a hero named Nick Meli.

As the shooter was having difficulty with his weapon, Meli pulled his and took aim, reluctant to fire lest an innocent bystander be hit. But he didn't have to pull the trigger: The shooter fled when confronted, ending his own life before it could be done for him.

We will never know how many lives were saved by an armed citizen that day.

From Virginia Tech to a movie theater in Aurora, Colo., to a school in Newtown, Conn., such mass shootings are usually in venues declaring themselves gun-free zones.

Other mass shootings — from a high school shooting by in Pearl, Miss., to the New Life Church shooting in Colorado Springs, Colo., which took place before the massacre in Aurora — have been cut short when someone retrieved a gun from a car or elsewhere and confronted the shooter.

John Fund, writing in National Review, notes that the Aurora shooter had a choice of seven movie theaters within a 20-mile drive of his home that were showing the Batman movie he was obsessed with. The Cinemark Theater he chose wasn't the closest, but it was the only one that banned customers from carrying their guns inside, otherwise allowed under Colorado law.

This is what always baffles me about the Anti-Gun nut thinking; how can they wrap their head around the idea that they are safer by banning guns from a public place.

A person bent on a criminal act such as robbery or murder is not going to respect your little sign in the window saying that guns are not permitted on the premises. It is simply foolish hubris to think that anyone with criminal intent would respect the owners wishes that he leave the gun he intends to use in his crime at home.

The question I would ask those who declare that arming the teachers is “crazy” is: why? What is crazy about it?

Everything I have read and heard about the events at Sandy Hook Elementary School indicate that the adults in that school acted not only with breathtaking courage but also with wisdom, using the limited tools at their disposal coolly and sensibly to protect their young charges.

So, why are the tools they have so terribly limited? Why are we expecting these brave sensible people to take on armed psychos with their bare hands?

Is the argument that the teachers are too stupid and irresponsible to handle firearms? Really? Explain to me how Dawn Hochsprung was too stupid to be trusted with a gun!

And then explain to me why people too stupid to be trusted with guns are trusted with the custody and teaching of your children.

Train all able bodied adults to rush the shooter!

No shooter can get us all.

Well done, Nick. A hero, indeed.

Just keep reminding yourself -- we all need to -- that THIS IS NOT ABOUT GUNS.

It's about despotically-minded, totalist people making America safe for despotism, abuse, tyranny, and their lusted-for totalitarianism.

It's about rendering the People helpless in the face of evil.

It’s “magical thinking”: by placing the talisman of a “Gun-Free Zone” placard on the wall, they think it mystically repels evil people with guns.

In reality, it’s a magnet for them. . .

Well I can see that if we are talking about politicians but I was considering the man or woman on the street; the shop owner that puts one of those signs on their door.

I see these people as what others on FR today have called emotional thinkers.

These people I envision as seeing someone that they know shot by a nut case (real or imagined) and thinking that the nut case never should have been permitted to have a gun and immediately jumping to the conclusion that in order for the nut cases of the world to never have a gun we must prevent anyone from ever having a gun. After all there is no way to determine for sure who will become a nutcase.

I don’t think the average person that supports gun control believes that gun control will lead to a totalitarian state. Most people today our country having become functionally illiterate when it comes to history and politics and therefore have no idea what true liberty or tyranny looks like. That being true they have no idea what the causes and effects of tyranny might be.

Most people have some idea that Hitler’s Germany killed a lot of Jews. Most have no idea that Stalin’s USSR killed more than 12 million to cement his power. Most people have no idea that both regimes confiscated civilian firearms early on.

The United States has become the Rome of bread and circuses. The people care more about watching sports on TV and going out to dinner than educating themselves about what their leaders are doing to them and what the consequences of those actions might be.

If we allow this to continue the barbarians will be inside the gates very soon.

Unfortunately it also repels good people with guns.

What a shame that the prinipal didn't have a gun with the training to use it.

Those poor babies, God Bless them, were like sitting ducks, with no protection!

50 years ago this would not have been thinkable. Progressives are stupid enough to Declare a gun free area.

I can guarantee there were guns in my grade school and if some nut walked in they would lose. Liberals make me sick. They caused this lunatic.
