You are correct. A study was done in our area and, not surprisingly, a high percentage of mentally ill people wind up being jailed because they end up committing crimes and being arrested. It is harder to commit a mentally ill person to an asylum than it is to arrest and jail the same person after they repeatedly cannot function in society. The activists who liberalized the mental health laws and released challenged people into society have contributed to many killings.
I was talking to my doctor today who as a medical student spent some time working at a county department that managed that population. To assure medication was provided and taken they required those under care to come in and collect their $ stipend only after the took their medicine in front of the medical personnel
