Finally, as Harvard economist Richard Frank observed, states have shifted much of their mental health funding into Medicaid, leaving funding for other programs bare. So now when states are faced with budget shortfalls it is mental health that is receiving the brunt of the cuts.
Obamacare will speed the hollowing out of mental health coverage thanks to its increased dependence on shoving most Americans into Medicaid. Obamacare proponents claimed they were protecting the mentally ill — most of whom they would cram into Medicaid — by barring states from limiting eligibility from what they now have.
Once again, mental health services are likely to be chopped. If states “save” money, the law requires it give a chunk of it to the federal government. Moreover, states can’t raise money by imposing or raising copays on Medicaid beneficiaries.
That means two things. First, services will be cut indirectly by cutting what doctors are paid. Fewer doctors means the state will pay for less care.
Second, under Obamacare the cheapest drugs for Medicaid will get the most business. That means doctors have to start with the cheapest medication, not the medication that is right for a patient. Several studies conducted over the last decade by Stephen Soumerai show that such restrictions actually make mental illness worse and expose patients to dangerous side effects. As a result, less than half of all people in mental health programs under Medicaid stick to their treatment plan. And since medications are the key to better outcomes, the rationing undermines care across the board.
As Cohn observed, it is these people who “could benefit from therapy, drugs, and community supports — frequently living totally normal, productive lives — instead end up without treatment and sometimes without homes. Inevitably some of these people end up committing crimes, overloading a criminal justice system ill-equipped to handle them.”

OT: BTW, don’t get me started on the VA. My friend had a Hassan in training give him a pamphlet on Sharia and Finance in America his cousin wrote. My friend told him what he thought of that; The guy threatened him with a bad diagnosis... not a lie, I was in the pharmacy waiting for him, he showed me. My buddy is a Korea vet with early stage Parkinson’s.
For years in the 80’s there was a guy who wandered downtown Pittsburgh. He wore military fatigues and claimed to be a vet but that was debatable. The man waas VERY unstable....severe mental problems. He was always walking in the middle of the street confronting people and stopping traffic.
The police would arrest him but he’d be back in a day or two. He became a poster boy of sorts for libs and social activists. I can’t recall how he met his endbut it was during one of his rants and did not end well for him.
I’m of the opinion that my youngest (HS sophomore) is staying home on Friday. Too much “chatter” about the Mayans end of times intersecting with the events of last week for me. Actually, I would like to bag the whole week and say “see ya next year.”
After what happened in CT, I talked w/ my son about how out District handled it yesterday (what was said, anything different on campus, etc.). He said nothing. Some teachers even said they didn’t want to talk about it (understandable)...yet he is aware enough to know who the kids are he feels “fit” the profile of they “lonely, introvert, genius, gothy nerd.” No wonder I have trouble sleeping.
Did anyone else see the story...in The Blaze I think...about a theaater shooting in Texas? An armed man entered the lobby, pulled a weapon and either dtarted shooting or threatened to shoot.
An off duty LEO pulled his weapon and the problem was solved. I believe it was supposed to be a gun free zone but luckily tthe LEO ignoredcp that.

It is so obvious the “meme” on CT. Now mom is the cause because she had extra food and water at her house—yet FEMA tells us to have a “kit” but just NOT too thorough of a “kit.” Or just a kit that will get your family thru a day or two...any more than that and your a “whack job.” They don’t even try to hide their contempt.

Quinn is right. The Mexican govt is always telling us how we should allow mexicans into this country and what our policies should be - and our government meekly does as it’s told. But NOOOOOOway will we try to rescue one of our citizens - and one who served his country with honor.
Everything is upside down; armed guards to protect the Brinks truck, but no armed guards to protect our children; save the baby seals, but kill babies in the womb; profile grandmothers and kids in strollers at the airport but not muslims. I don’t recognize this country anymore.
