NEWTOWN, Conn. (CNN) – Dick’s Sporting Goods, one of the largest sporting goods retailers in the world, says it has removed all guns from its store nearest to Newtown, Connecticut, and is suspending the sale of certain kinds of semi-automatic rifles from its chains nationwide.
The move was made out of respect for the victims and families of last week’s Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting “during this time of national mourning,” the store said in a statement Tuesday morning.
“We continue to extend our deepest sympathies to those affected by this terrible tragedy,” the statement said.
It was unclear how long the store will keep the suspension in place for the guns, known as ‘modern sporting rifles.’

I was planning on buying a $300 single shot pellet rifle from Dicks this week, but now I’ll just drive the extra 2 miles to Gander Mountain.

Interesting how I was just this minute looking at the Dicks Holiday (Christmas) Catolog and in the back are assault rifles. I’ll be tearing thins up.
What do you mean? It’s a machine gun. Everybody knows machine guns can fire up to a gazillion rounds per second. /s
Dick’s purhchased Galyan’s in 2004 which was a shame. Galyan’s had a large store in Overland Park which had a huge selection of firearms, hunting gear and ammo. Dick’s wiped most of that out and replaced it with endless yuppie, fashion chic sporting wear.
Dick’s has always been a joke in their firearms and hunting areas so it’s no great loss. Having said that, I will not support this politically correct joke of a sporting goods store.
So he had a 223 rifle in the school and a shotgun in the trunk.
5 rnds/sec for those two handguns, that’s impressive...I guess you do that when you flip the selector switch to Auto and hold down on the trigger.
Look, Dick’s is a sporting good store that you can tell really hates having a gun department in the first place. They don’t have handguns, and hardly try to sell the long rifles they have. The only good deal I have ever seen there is for small camping tents.

A crazy guy intent on killing will get any kind of weapon from any one of thousands of places to carry out his insanity. No law will stop it.
They just opened 2 stores in Oklahoma City. I went in once to look around. I wasn’t impressed and predict they won’t last here. Academy blows them away.

I don't buy guns from them, anyway. I use the Internet and always transfer through my local store, so they get the transfer fee.
I have avoided Dick’s every since I tried to go to their website. Beware - it is NOT dicks.com! I got some strange looks from my wife when the website popped up.
the one near us has two floors and maybe 200000 square feet - the overhead must be outrageous....i cant for the life of me figure out how the place makes money

Bushmaster designed for military and LEO use? Really? Our local cops carry selective-fire Armalite rifles in .223. Bushmaster makes a bulk of their money from semi-auto sales to law-abiding civilians.
Also, the Glock used in this incident was a Glock 21/30 in 10mm, NOT the 9mm Glock 26 pictured here.

I guess the management of Dick’s DIDN’T READ that the sale of firearms in Colorado, one day after the Newtown shooting, broke all records.
There is still a sizable portion of the American populous that ‘gets it’
