Four were killed in three different incidents in the sprawling port city and the fifth in the northwestern city of Peshawar, on the second day of a nationwide three-day drive against the disease, which is endemic in Pakistan.
Sagheer Ahmed, the health minister for Sindh province, of which Karachi is capital, said he had ordered a halt to the anti-polio drive in the city in the wake of the shootings.
Senior Karachi police officer Shahid Hayat said another polio worker was shot dead in the city on Monday, but the circumstances of his death only became clear on Tuesday. In Peshawar, which lies close to the restive tribal areas, a haven for militants and hotspot for polio, two attackers on a motorbike fired on two sisters working on vaccination, killing one, senior police official Javed Khan told AFP.
The incident took place in Mathra suburb of Peshawar which borders Mohmand tribal district, Khan said.
Hayat blamed "militants who issued a fatwa against polio vaccination in the past" for the Karachi killings.
Pakistan is one of only three countries where the highly infectious crippling disease remains endemic, along with Afghanistan and Nigeria

Rotary is a service organization which set out the erradication of polio some years ago and had made great strides in that effort. Two years ago, the Gates foundation donated $300million to this cause in a matching grant. As a Rotary member it saddens me greatly about the actions of these neantherthals. We were extremely close to wiping out this disease once and for all but this will be a step back.
If Pakistanis (or other people for that matter) don’t have up to date Polio vaccinations, they should not be allowed to enter the United States.
Put a barb-wire fence with extra layers of razor-concertina around the entire region....
Keep them all inside the wire....
Let the fight it out...

IIRC, the final critical connection that lead to the Osama Bin Ladin raid in Pakistan was provided by a physician who used a vaccination campaign in Abbottabad to gather information for the CIA on the occupants of the compound. Maybe the militants are scared that the same ruse is still being used.

Although I don’t believe it was in Pakistan, I also have read in the past about claims made by very conservative Islamic clerics that the vaccination was a covert attempt by the West to render Muslim men impotent.
I don’t really see why do-gooder western people think they should be messing with Islamic rulers and populations.
Leave them be because they are going to act out for allah, no matter what do-gooders wish to challenge and “change.” Leave them alone or they will continue to turn their hate on the West. Islolate them so they can want to change themselves and each other.
Cut off their heads if they mess with us.
I agree. We have enough poor Christian, Hindu, Sikh etc. people who will welcome the help. Let the oil rich Saudis help the poor Moslems.
