House Speaker John Boehner plans to introduce a bill on the House floor that would include tax increases on incomes above $1 million, he said this morning at a press conference.
"We're going to move to Plan B," Boehner said. "Our Plan B would protect American taxpayers who make $1 million or less."
That means, for the first time publicly, Boehner acknowledged he would be open to increased tax rates in a deal to avert the so-called fiscal cliff. Boehner said he hoped to avoid tax hikes on as many people as possible ahead of a Jan. 1 deadline.
Boehner emphasized that he was not breaking off talks with President Barack Obama on a larger, "balanced" budget deal. But he expressed frustration with the White House's pace of negotiations.
"We do not have a balanced plan when the President is calling for $1.3 trillion in revenue and only willing to put up $850 billion in cuts over 10 years," Boehner said. Last night, Boehner's office put the amount of spending cuts in Obama's plan at $930 billion.
"What we've offered meets the definition of balance," Boehner said. "But the White House is not there yet."
White House Press Secretary Jay Carney panned Boehner's plan in a statement:

WaPo/ABC poll: Compromise on fiscal cliff but without cuts
We need 1.3 trillion in cuts THIS YEAR, Mr. Speaker! Not ten years.
After seeing the election results of some of the richest areas & their unbelievable support for Jughead, I’m tempted to say raise their taxes & let them reap what they have sown.
About time the GOP cut it's sole allegiance to the upper 2% and get to respond to middle class needs before that whole group is permanently lost to the Democrats. A prosperous middle class votes Republican, i.e. Reagan and both Bushs.
some ways, Boehner is seeming worse than Obama. At least if we go over the cliff, like Obama seems to want, some cuts would happen.
At least when he says “million” he actually means “million”.
For whatever reason (I cannot imagine why) a million has somehow been downgraded to $250,000.
The WH has already rejected this Plan B.
So why is Bonehead putting his caucus in the position to vote for Tax Increases?
I’ll tell u why. This is nothing more than a test vote. A vote to see who
votes for the tax increases and who doesn’t .
Then Bonehead will start threatening, bribing etc on those vote against
this Plan B.
This vote is nothing more than a test vote, in a brazen action to see where
the votes are and where they are not. Let the strong arming begin.
What he should be doing is instead offering enormous cuts to government spending in the least popular parts of the government. Truly massive cuts to departments like Sibelius’ HHS, Holders’ Justice and BATF&E, Lisa P. Jackson’s EPA, Napolitano’s Homeland Security, etc.
It would send a message to many groups to support the Republicans in this.
Most importantly, it would change the debate from “new taxes” to “spending cuts”. The more taxes Obama demanded, the more spending cuts the Republicans demand. Get Obama’s name associated with higher taxes, and who do you think the public will blame when their taxes automatically go up?
No cuts will happen ever. We've jumped the shark, past the tipping point, crossed the threshold, sold our souls, etc... you get the picture.
Looking back, it’s too bad the Rs held the House. Had the Ds taken it, the entire financial bomb would belong to them. But because the Rs won, whatever evil, stinking mess emerges regarding the Cliff Debt, the Rs will be held responsible because they were part of the “compromise deal.” I do not have words bad enough for Boner and his RINOs.
Bonehead needs to look back at Bush (1) presidency where the democrats swore that they would pass spending cuts if only he would do a tax increase (Read my lips-No new taxes). After the tax increase passed the dems would not do any spending cuts. Bonehead if going to do the same thing. Isn’t that a sing of insanity. Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results???
The difference between a compromise and a sellout on the part of John Boehner would be if he demands a sacrifice by Obama and the Democrats equal to the Republicans’ sacrifice of being willing to increase taxes on some of the wealthy.
But John Boehner does not seem to be asking for anything in return for the Republicans’ concession. If he were merely a political hack, we could at least expect a quid pro quo arrangement that would benefit the Republicans in some way.
Instead, John Boehner’s ‘’Plan B’’ offer to Obama and the Democrats seems to be, We’ll cave in, take it or leave it.’’
Well, if you happened to check out DU last night after hints of "the deal" came out (pull back on COLA, tax hikes on people making over $400,000 not $250,000 and reversing the payroll tax cut) they sure were hating it.
Lots and lots and lots of anti-Obama comments.
"...All you gotta do, Mr. Bloated Bureaucrat, is stamp it with some phony 'public interest' title. Make 'em think you're giving 'em something out of your benevolence. Whatever you do, don't tell 'em about the money you'll be taking from them."
The latest phony public interest title is "affordable health care". Obamacare has nothing to do with "affordable health care" but very little in Washington D.C has to do with the labels it gives itself. All they need is an uneducated, gullible public.
Obamacare will not be far behind. Kind of like the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse in the Book of Revelation - one right after the other...
what makes people think the insider elite pubs don’t want taxes to go up, govt to expand?....
