America's thriving gun industry, which has been riding high on a surge in sales, is under increasing pressure in the wake of Friday's elementary school massacre.
Responding to a national wave of revulsion over the 27 murders in Newtown, Conn., retail chain Dick's Sporting Goods Inc. on Tuesday suspended sales of semiautomatic rifles at its 480 stores, while Wal-Mart Stores Inc. WMT +0.43% deleted from its website a listing for one such rifle.
Private-equity firm Cerberus Capital Management LP said Tuesday it would try to sell Freedom Group Inc., the manufacturer of the Bushmaster rifle that police say Adam Lanza used in last week's shootings.
"We have to get control of this," said Larry Stone, a member of Dick's board, in an interview Tuesday. Mr. Stone said he fully supported the decision to remove the semiautomatic guns from Dick's shelves. "I hope other people follow suit," he said.

Whaaaah.
(get over it, people)
It was terrible, now it’s over for those now directly impacted. We move on now.
If they get rid of all the guns, what are all those government agencies going to do with all of those millions of rounds of ammunition that they recently ordered. Hey, wait just a minute....
If I own a semi-auto gun, a machine gun, or even a tank, and nobody knows about it or can get access to it, and I’m not committing violent crimes with it,how is that affecting ANYONE?
More guns = less crime.
They will be the only ones with guns of course. That ammo will be needed to keep the peasants under control.
Dicks should pay a price for their stupidity.
As for Cerebus, they should stick to their investment in turkey for 400 million. No firearms over there. (just ask the Kurds)
The only pressure for the manufacturers will be meeting demand.

thousands of suicides a year from these - mostly by hanging. Will gun control stop these?

The shooters always pick gun-free zones - not where citizens can be legally armed.
Chicago: strictest gun control laws - highest in murders/crime
No big deal about Dick's. Its never been a good place to buy a gun anyway. They are more interested in catering to the spandex Nazis and pro sports addicts. Poor selection and poor inventory control. Never can find much of I want. Now I have an even better reason not to shop there.
ammo is residing somewhere with hen's teeth.
The industry has seen from 300 to 600% increase in sales during this regime - so he HAS been good for one sector.
But, kinda like Emperor Hirohito, after he attacked America, I think they are nervous about those guns behind every blade of grass.
Looks like the concern has become reality!
Larry Stone of Dick’s board is an idiot. Ninety-nine percent of hunters in the U.S. most likely use semi-automatics. Think about it - how many folks do you know that hunt with a single shot. I know I’m not that good. This is an attack on all hunters and gun owners and I pray this madness toward gun owners and aficionados stops. It is so predictable.
Sorry for the double post.
The chief of Dicks, and everyone else, has over-interpreted what is happening.
Nobody, but nobody, could explain away or shrug their shoulders at what happened. It was truly tragic.
That said, it is now over for all but a very few. Those few will never be the same, the rest of us will get back with the world the way it was. Tragedy struck, and 28 people’s lives were ruined. It s*cks, but so do other things. On balance, life is good.
This is over now. The media and Dems must be very careful because they are vastly over-playing things.
Looks as if Bushmaster in Maine is closing....http://www.pressherald.com/news/bushmaster-closing-windham-plant_2010-12-11.html
Sad, another blow to the sagging Maine economy.
I believe Bushmaster was the only gun company to ever fold under pressure to pay in a settlement case [Washington sniper case;, perhaps this wound is self-inflicted.
Ok Dick's Sporting Goods, I will now suspend permanently any purchases from your stores. In fact I won't even go inside any of your politically correct but insane stores. Be sure to post "Guns are forbidden on these premises" as you wonder why your hunting & fishing departments are suddenly losing money & business patronage.
“The only pressure for the manufacturers will be meeting demand.”
Exactly, I’ve been trying to buy a Ruger 10/22 Takedown now for several months and cannot get my hands on one as they are on “Backorder” in-perpetuity!
