Bank Robbers Joseph Banks, Kenneth Conley use bed sheets to escape Chicago prison.
They rappelled down the building from the 15th floor.
Two convicted bank robbers were on the run after using a knotted rope or bed sheets to escape from a federal prison window high above downtown Chicago early Tuesday, a week after one of them made a courtroom vow of retribution.
The escape occurred sometime between 5 a.m. and 8:45 a.m. when the inmates were discovered missing, Chicago Police Sgt. Mark Lazarro said. Hours later, what appeared to be a rope, knotted at six-foot intervals, could be seen dangling from a window of the Metropolitan Correctional Center approximately 20 stories above the ground.
Joseph “Jose” Banks, 37, and Kenneth Conley, 38, had been wearing prison-issue orange jumpsuits, but now might be wearing white t-shirts, gray sweat pants and white gym shoes, Lazarro said.

Would have loved to fire up that sheet ladder and see how fast they could climb back up.
Good thing that background checks will keep these two from obtaining any firearms. Especially in chitown. Also, isn’t it against the rules to break out of jail? Man are they in trouble when they get caught.

Unfortunately they no doubt “know people who know people” with guns.
15 stories at, say, 12.5 feet per story, and allowing for the loss of usable length due to the knots at either end of the sheet, would require something on the order of 40 bed sheets to construct a rope of that length.
now, the question; how did the guards (public employee union members, no doubt) manage to NOT notice 40 bedsheets being gathered, collected in one place, and/or missing?

Yeah, but that would be against the law. They’re in enough trouble already. Don’t want to add to it now. LOL!
I was thinking the same thing! Maybe they ripped the sheets down the middle?
This is a problem with passive security as well. How do you NOT NOTICE guys rapelling down a wall? Well, if you have no eyes assigned to watch that wall, because you are certain your passive means will work.
It actually ties into the shooting at the school, because the school has passive methods of protection — laws making things illegal, locks on doors, lockdown procedures. No active security measures, like a person who can repel a gunman.
Maybe they dropped out the sheets as a ruse and bribed a guard to let them out a door.
I've been wondering the same. Plus, once you manage to get them out of the laundry room and cause a miscount in inventory (which is regularly done), how do you hide 40 bedsheets in a tiny little cell? Then, how do you get out the window which should be reinforced? Either there were major failures within the system and the building structure or someone got an early Christmas stocking filled with $$$$.
Outlaw sheets it’s the liberal way.
this same thing was attempted from unit 7 North at Manhattan MCC...the federal holding joint down near the Brooklyn bridge in 1992
3 Chinese Tongs cut through the brick wall and steel to the outside with dental floss and comet powder
they tied sheets together too
each floor at MCC is around 4 floors so it was around 28-30 floors up
they were spotted by a taxi driver and apprehended after they hit the street on Park Row
Were they employees of Barclays or Goldman Sachs?
Rappelling doesn’t seem to be the best choice of words for reporting accuracy, I doubt that they were doing what most of us think of when we use the word “rappelling”.
