The Sandy Hook school shooting has reignited the debate around violent video games, with even some of the games' designers claiming the 'ultraviolence has to stop.'
Gunman Adam Lanza, 20, was reportedly 'obsessed' with military shooters' game Call of Duty - which features assault weapons similar to the Bushmaster AR-15, one of three guns he used to slaughter his mother, Nancy, and 26 innocent children and school staff on Friday.
But even before the latest massacre, gamers were beginning to voice concerns that modern offerings were 'fetishizing violence' and that they would 'ultimately cause (the country) trouble.'
At this year's E3 – the Electronic Entertainment Expo, the industry's largest U.S. gathering – some attendees were stunned by the intensity of violence on display.

When I was a kid in 1940`s -50`s they were blaming cowboy n` Indian movies, “B” movies, for violence. HAHA
Video games, and even dodgeball, occasionally garner blame from congenital idiots for intense, real-world violence.
It’s all bunk, of course.
So far we’ve heard the gun is to blame, white males are to blame (some Professor is now claiming this), video games are to blame, Republicans are to blame, the NRA is to blame, but nobody says anything about this mother who left her guns out in the open while she went to sleep even though she told her babysitter “Don’t let him out of your sight for a second”.
What does that say? Don’t let him out of your sight because the kid was out of control! So much so that she wanted him institutionalized which they say is why he flipped out. Yet she lets him blast off guns at a shooting range, which BTW put other shooters in potential danger, and then she leaves the guns out and takes a nap. “Yes Adam I’m going to institutionalize you. Now Mommy is going to sleep. Don’t touch my guns.”
It would be interesting to find out if she belonged to the NRA and if she bothered to involve herself in ANYTHING related to education and safety from the 65,000 instructors they provide. I’m betting not, stupid b*tch.

That’s it, no one else.
The mother did not want to get shot in the face. The mother did not want her son to go and execute innocent children and adults.
Adam Lanza is to blame. All of this was his choice and his action.
If you want to stop this from happening again, then defend in advance those things that are precious to you from those who may decide and will decide to attack those things that are precious to you.
You know they are coming. It’s just a matter of when. Knowing that they are coming, if we decide not to defend in advance that which is precious to us, then obviously it’s not as precious as we say it is.
I get what you’re saying but the kid was a head case and she was irresponsible. She says don’t keep your eyes off him and she wanted him committed, yet she leaves her guns out? What the hell? Was she hoping that maybe he would accidentally shoot himself?
I wish all these academics, politicians, preachers and do-gooders would play a few rounds of MW3 before criticizing violent video games. It might change their minds.

I’ve played video games my entire adult life and I am 50 years old, so that’s a lot of video games. I played FPS’s since Doom, RPGs since Zork, and simulators since FS2 and F15 Strike Eagle.
But, the FPS games today are really obscenely violent. 30 minutes of MW3 does affect my mood and responses to stimuli, and not in a good way. As I said, I’m 50, a veteran (but not a combat vet), been married for 30 years, and am employed as an automation programmer so I’m not some easily-excited kid without a moral compass.
But, these new games are too much, especially for today’s boys who grow up without ever being exposed to danger of any kind. They weren’t allowed climb trees, run wild in the woods, or fight each other with sticks and rocks to learn the consequences of doing stupid things. They had supervised play dates, day care from infancy, helicopter parents, and lots of computer games. The scariest thing in their world is peanuts and asthma.
Those of us who had a real childhood as a free range human with all the excitement and injuries we could handle can’t imagine what its like to be one of these pampered little princesses when the only manly influence in their life is a violent video game where you get to ressurrect over and over again until you “learn the level” and win.
I’ll say this. I’m a pretty mellow guy. My work involves representong victims of domestic violence in court, so I’m a very anti-violence sort.
That said, after an intense day in trial, sometimes the best therapy is a session of CoD.
We don’t know for a fact that she left her guns out.
This Adam Lanza was obviously a very capable plotter and murderer.
Kids know all their parents weakness and security flaws. I remember being a kid, and I knew.
This guy wasn’t even a kid, he was a 20 year old psychopath.
I do not believe that she wanted any of this to happen.
I cannot blame her, Yoda, she’s a victim of him as much as anyone else is.
I believe it is very important to focus clearly on what happened here and who is responsible for it. Making judgments and decisions amid grief, anger and sadness is not wise and it isn’t productive.
Furthermore, behaving as such leaves us open for predators to take advanatge of our inability to think clearly. Not only are political sharks circling, every day that we don’t fortify our schools is another day that this could happen again.
And then we would be crying why oh why did this happen again...
The shooter was isolated, lonely, brain-diseased, and likely mentally ill. It’s about all of that, not video games, however violent.

How old are you? I’m talking about people who are teens and very young adults. They grew up behind fences, being told that predators lurk everywhere so they can’t ride their bike past the end of the driveway. They couldn’t run wild with other boys because they might get hurt or abducted or encounter something they’re allergic to.
You must have socialized pretty well and went on to get an education and now you work at a job that is a career. Perhaps you have a home and/or a family. You aren’t the screwed up young male that I was talking about.

That is institutional danger. The civilized children are brought in to a closed environment along with the ferals. There’s nothing that the civilized children can do about it, adding to their stress. I’m talking about the kind of danger that boys used to get into on their own. The “do I climb up on that roof and jump off” kind of danger where they can do stupid things, get hurt or not, and learn valuable lessons about consequences.
All school teaches them is powerlessness, unless they can rise to Alpha status and then it teaches them that violence is the only answer.
