WASHINGTON (AP) — The number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits rose last week by 17,000, reversing four weeks of declines. But the number of people seeking aid is consistent with a job market that continues to grow modestly.

Unemployment claims rose the week of Dec. 15 to a seasonally adjusted 361,000 from a revised 344,000 the week before.

Yes, we are ‘growing modestly’ into the abyss.

Love the headline....17,000 is such a small number and a much calmer viewing than the actual numbers.../sarc

Claims rose but the % of unemployed will most likely go down per the white house narrative. Must be new math at play huh? Even when the adjusted numbers come out. We just went through the help wanted ads where we live and there are lots of jobs available. Not the 100K kind but there are a lot of them. Weird huh? Wonder if there just aren’t people qualified for some of them or they just don’t WANT them. Since we moved here my wife has been offered a job at several places without even asking. WTH? She hasn’t taken one though. I guess she doesn’t want one. LOL! Of course neither one of us are doing the unemployment thing either so we don’t count anyway.

Helping keep mankind warm for 65 years.

The GOP is running for the tall grass on all of the social issues.

Meanwhile if they would hold firm to Social Conservatism and perhaps moderate on some economic stands (not EVERY free-trade treaty is a good idea, sometimes business really DOES abuse its customers, maybe a few high-rolling bankers really DO need to go to jail, etc.) I think they’d start doing much better at the polls.

“But the number of people seeking aid is consistent with a job market that continues to grow modestly.”

So where is the ‘growth’?

If you are looking for work, and not working, you "count." Unemployment compensation does not figure into the "calculation."
