DA to Marin County: Turn in your guns Jan. 15 By Nels Johnson

"Let's do something more than just talk," District Attorney Ed Berberian urged the Board of Supervisors, calling on residents to "turn in their reservoir of guns that are really not needed in our county."

"What can we do? What should we do? How can we stop this from happening?" Berberian asked, summing up the reflections of many. "We are a society with too many guns."

The program, proposed by Supervisor Susan Adams and Berberian, will be coordinated by Berberian's staff and involve locales across the county at which

residents can turn in guns of all kinds.

The proposal follows the slaughter of 20 children and six teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., Friday.

"It is unimaginable, the pain and grief," Adams said, noting that "We have our own issues of gun violence here in Marin," with shootings in San Rafael and Marin City.

"When do you say, 'enough'?" Adams asked.

Noting that Newtown is similar in many respects to Marin, the district attorney said that what happened in Connecticut "can happen anywhere, at any time."

Officials seemed to agree that while largely symbolic, a gun buy-back program is an initial step. Details including times, places and how much cash will be offered to gun donors will be

Other actions include making sure authorities are trained and equipped to respond, ensuring schools are prepared for emergencies, and that mental health programs receive the attention they deserve, officials said.

Berberian noted that the county sheriff's office has only one "resource" officer to serve 32 schools, a staffing level Supervisor Kate Sears agreed should be expanded.

"It's time to take action to make ourselves better by taking care of others," Sears added, saying gun control, training, mental health and related programs are part of the solution.

Berberian, noting King died in a "senseless act of gun violence," said the civil rights leaders' birthday provides an ideal time to hold a buy-back program. "It would be something ... I'm sure he would support," Berberian said.

Gun buy-back programs in Oakland and San Francisco over the weekend took an arsenal off the streets. Some 349 handguns, 149 rifles, 92 shotguns and another six guns that owners handed over without even waiting for a $200 payment.

Nearly 600 guns — from vintage World War rifles to modern day assault weapons — are in storage waiting to be melted down following what officials in both cities called their most successful buy-back to date.

Well, they just made a bunch of criminals happy. Of course, most criminals would have prefered the liberal idiots would have waited for the $200 for an extra bonus when the criminals robbed them.

I was born in San Rafael, lived in Marin City (I’m white), went to school in San Rafael and Novato. Went to college at College of Marin and Cal Poly, SLO. Worked for the Public Utility Commission while living in San Francisco.

I left California in 1973, never to return for more than a day or two, it just got too strange for me! Like now!

While there, among other things, I endured some of the oddest educational initiatives with predictable poor results, maternity clothes as a “fashion statement” by high school girls and public employees so incompetent that, because they couldn’t be fired, they were assigned to special units for work, where they could spend their days in total obscurity!

Therefore, it doesn’t surprise me, at all, that they embark on some new, hare-brained stunt, for whatever the cause célèbre might be at the moment!

I used to live in Marin County. I thank God every day I was able to escape. Here is a Constitutional primer this politically correct government doofus should have learned in law school...with guns we are citizens...without them we are subjects.

not a bad idea.

OK Freepers get to it, more babies and raise them as conservatives

hell you might like your state CA but lets face it whilst you say it;s a lot conservative in areas, the majority I speak with are hapy to get the hell out and the ones still there are fed up of giving their money to a state which keeps passing liberal policies

Most conservatives having babies, and making them yiipppeee, LOL.
seriously I only asked a question and gave an idea off the cuff, hell didn;t think I;d upset someone about asking why any conservatives stay in liberal states today.

got my wife out of liberal socialist MA and she said it was the best move she ever did.
Now we know our votes count more than it did, our money goes to not liberal policies and we even chose to live in one of the most republican counties in the state called St Johns after looking at the census forms before we moved.
People speak English, most work, republicans outnumber Dems and non party combined, we have the best schools in the state, hardly any crime etc.

Contrast our county in our swing state to a Dem county and you;ll see how our county works and is safe compared to any of the 4 cess pit counties in the state which is full of illegals, northern liberals and just basically locusts who move on mass looking to destroy another state aftwr they have destroyed their old state

correct the left would be happy at first seing all conservatives moving out of the liberal states but after a few months of not enough money coming in, seeing their electoral count go down, lack of tax money, lack of job makers etc then they would be lookng to move out fo their liberal socialist utopia within a year and then still shout raise tax, pro queer agenda any kind of marriage ,pro illegals crap

The Marin County DA sounds like a petty fascist. Pound sand, comrade counselor.

That said, with California in a death spiral to bankruptcy, how long before the Donkeys impose an “exit tax” on those trying to escape the People’s Democratic Republic of California?

I’m a little younger than most in my circle of friends here.

I think things were already turning to shite as I grew up.

But even so it’s worse now. They couldn’t find enough democraps to vote in hillarycare in 1993/94.

NO ONE was for fag marriage in 1995. I remember in 2000 when Vermont invented “civil unions” for gays. I had never thought of such a thing, I was like “What? That doesn’t make sense”, and even then in the 2000 election the Republicans took over the state house because of that!! In Vermont, even as Bush only got 40% there! And in only 12 years things have changed big time.

“I think things were already turning to shite as I grew up.”

I’m on the doorstep of 40 and like I wrote yesterday, I don’t feel that this is the same country I grew up in.

“I remember in 2000 when Vermont invented “civil unions” for gays. I had never thought of such a thing, I was like “What? That doesn’t make sense””

Exactly!!!

“And in only 12 years things have changed big time.”

Like I’ve written several times, the rate of decay has increased exponentially.
