WWRD? What would Reagan do about America's fiscal crisis?

As President Obama and Democrats urge Republicans to increase taxes, liberals curiously invoke the name of Ronald Reagan, the ultimate tax-cutting Republican. They insist that even Reagan was willing to compromise with Democrats on tax increases; thus, John Boehner and Republicans should as well. In truth, this is (at best) a false parallel.

It is correct that Ronald Reagan occasionally compromised on certain tax increases, as he did in 1982. He did so in exchange for promised spending cuts from Democrats that (not surprisingly) never materialized, to his great regret. Reagan would constantly point back to this broken promise by Democrats.

More importantly, however, President Reagan never budged on income taxes. He flatly refused to increase income taxes, which is what President Obama demands of Republicans right now. Reagan understood that not all taxes, and thus not all tax increases, were equal.

For insight into Ronald Reagan’s thinking, consider what he did in 1981, when faced with a stagnant economy: At his California ranch on August 13, 1981, Reagan, working with a Democratic House and Republican Senate, secured a 25% across-the-board reduction in income tax rates over a three-year period beginning in October 1981. Eventually, through this and later cuts, the upper income-tax rate was slashed from 70% to 28%.

One thing he would NOT be doing is traveling the country on the tax payer dime, spewing a bunch of BS that this buffoon is doing.

Reagan blamed Carter before he was elected.

After he was elected he took measures to fix things.

In short order, there was only credit to take for having fixed things.

We’ll be in 2013 in twelve days, and the events of late 2008 are still Obama’s excuse.

Paradoxical question. If Reagan were President, we wouldn’t have a fiscal crisis.

In order for Reagan to do anything, he would have to be elected first. I don’t think Reagan could do anything if he weren’t President.

When Reagan was out of office he had no effect on Nixon, Ford, or Carter.

I think one of the things he would do would be to reassure Americans that they are smart, innovative, moral, and good, and that the lops who tell you that Americans are children and leeches are just that — lops.

So true. What does that say? The greatest "conservative" President (possibly in the history of the republic) never got spending cuts, was rolled by the socialists, was vilified by the socialists, is still vilified by the socialists and never did identify the domestic enemies as such.

R.I.P., sir.

He would go on T.V. and take it to the people who make this country run and explain if this is what you want then call your represenative and let them know because they work for you, not the other way around.

Ronald Reagan was the reason I registered to vote. He always knew and could express that America was an amazing place. Something extra ordinary. When he spoke it made me proud to be in the military and to be an American.

He is the only president worthy of me watching his state of the union address.

Reagan could not get elected today. He was a phenomenon for his time, never to be repeated.

Besides, Reagan was a RINO: he gave amnesty to illegals, raised taxes, and cut and ran from Lebanon. HE’S JUST NOT GOOD ENOUGH!

Same here. I was 13 when he was elected. Even at that tender age, I was impressed with the man.

Last time I saw RR (in the '90s) on TV was when he made a birthday video for Rush Limbaugh on Rush's TV show.

When they cut back to Rush, he was wiping away tears.

Truly one of the top 4 Presidents in history.
