An effort by a Livingston billionaire to hand out free $100 gift cards to Jersey City residents affected by Hurricane Sandy turned into a fiasco last week after some residents who spent hours on line say they were later not able to obtain the gift cards.
The effort led to long lines at some community groups last Monday night as people sought to register for the cards and long lines again two days later when residents showed up to pick them up, according to residents, community leaders and organizers of the charity effort.
Two City Councilwoman blasted the effort at last nights council meeting, saying it was poorly run and led to seniors and handicapped people waiting in the cold for hours to no avail. One woman had to be sent to the hospital, they said.
It really teed me off, said Councilwoman at large Viola Richardson. It really tore up the community.
Better Education Institute, the nonprofit arm of education-reform group Better Education for Kids, both funded by billionaire David Tepper, organized the giveaway, which seeks to hand out $100 Target gift cards to 13,000 people statewide, and nearly 2,500 here in Jersey City.

No good deed ever goes unpunished...especially when it’s Dumbocrats doing the punishment.
They prefer kick-backs. That is the preferred sport of Hudson County.
The term “Ungrateful Wretches” comes to mind.
What a shame. A good, legitimate gesture and the Libs are screaming because in the end it is too good a show of the fact that there is goodness and dependability from a source other than government- i.e. your neighbors WILL help!
I don’t doubt that it wasn’t the most organized thing in the world, but then again, how could something like that be perfect.
For all of times, when handouts being, public or private, there will always be long lines an disappointment. That is a risk you need to be willing to take to receive a handout.
It’s terrible to be inconveninced when you are getting something for free.
I wonder how many of those complaining they missed out had already got three.
You mean they had to wait for their free money? Does Obama know about this? He needs to do SOMETHING!
“It really teed me off, said Councilwoman at large Viola Richardson”
Oh, go to hell, you worthless whiner.
Obama should just ban gift cards- problem solved!
The Son of God said to do your charitable works in secret........
A guy called in to our local radio talk show and said he was sitting in the bar across the street from the welfare office his wife was in line for. It was raining and the guy pretended he couldn’t understand why the government didn’t put up awnings or a shelter for the poor people who were in line for their paychecks. He was spoofing, but man, did he get the lines buzzing that day. Bad part was, most called to Agree with him.
It really tore up the community. ...Uhh, lady, something ELSE tore up your community, I think. Such as Democrats.
