Also, a fact worth remembering. Just before we entered WWII the Brits were worried about the Germans invading. There weren't enough firearms in the country to arm the home guard. Something about gun control.
They asked for some help from us colonials. FDR couldn't or wouldn't give them small arms, so the people of the US were asked to give up some of their arms for the Brits.
A lot were volunteered by our people which were never returned but confiscated and destroyed by the Brit gov because guns in the hands of the people was bad.

Its a myth that they were consficated at the end of the war, the fact is that almost all of them were simply melted down very quickly to help Britain’s war production.
