Cobb gun show attracts scores looking for assault-style rifles (Atlanta, GA)
THE ATLANTA JOURNAL-CONSTITUTION ^ | Dec. 22, 2012 | Chris Joyner

As gun control talks heat up in Washington, more than 1,000 people lined up Saturday morning outside the exhibit hall at Jim Miller Park in Cobb County for the Eastman Gun Show.

Many hoped to walk away with assault-style rifles and high-capacity magazines they fear may soon be outlawed.

“This is awesome,” said Kevin Law, a gun enthusiast and surveyor from Woodstock. He attended the show with his brother Keith Law. “We knew it was going to be like this. People want to protect their rights.”

Like many in line in the freezing temperatures, the Law brothers had planned to attend the show before the mass shooting at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn., on Dec. 14 claimed the lives of 26 people, most of them children. The mass shooting revived gun control talks on Capitol Hill.

But the shifting political landscape had those in the Cobb County line bracing against more than just the cold.

Early attendees left the show wheeling cases of ammunition, while individual gun owners worked the long line arranging private sales of assault-style weapons.

Everything's gone and from what I've read, many manufacturers are holding off producing new inventory out of fear that they could be left with huge surpluses of stock that they'll no longer be allowed to sell.

Looks like if you waitied until now before making purchases of scary, black rifles and high-cap magazines, you're SOL.

Or at least, you'll have to pay higher prices now.... Have you noticed that Brownell's and Midawy are completely sold out of AR-15/M-14/AK magazines?

Sounds like the people have spoken.

The gun shops are raising prices on AR15 type rifles now.

I foresee a lot of price gouging coming.

“The price for a bushmaster has gone up by as much as 50 percent since Friday. The AR-15 assault rifle is the most popular style of rifle to buy, usually used for target practice or hunting small game. But, it was also a killer’s weapon of choice to gun down 26 people in Connecticut.”

Gun, Ammo And Magazine Sales Soar, Prices Skyrocket, Stock Levels Low

The Obama administration announcement that they are supporting a new Assault Weapon Ban, and a ban on high capacity magazines, has sent shockwaves through the industry. All day consumers have been buying guns, ammunition and magazines.

I had an AK-47 and got rid of it because it tended to beat me up when firing it (putting on a few years and had a detached retina that I would like to keep re-attached). Recently acquired a carbine chambered for .357/.38 Special. It’s lever action and the cals it takes helps keep down the number of different ammos I need to buy. It’s no AK (or even 30-30/308/30-06 for that matter) but the gains in speed/energy when a .357 is fired from a longer barrel allows it to be effective at 150+ yards, which is fine for my purposes. Another benefit is a relatively gentle kick compared to the more potent rifles.

Yep! There's nothing left except rifles that fire .22LR (and those will probably be gone soon as well). I don't know if the people in general are speaking or if a smaller number of people are stockpiling (or hoarding, depending how you look at it). Probably a little of both.

Certainly, there's plenty of first and second-time gun buyers who had been sitting on the fence until last Friday and figured it was time to to open their wallets and grab a few spare magazines while they're at it, but, as this article tells others are wheeling out cases of ammo. Additionally, I've read about people buying boxes of magazines and "assault" rifles a dozen at a time. They probably figure they'll be able to flip them later and make a healthy profit. Wish I had that kind of disposable income.

Price increases in the face of increased demand is just capitalism at work. “price gouging” is a pretty pejorative term.

It’ll be same if some event causes peppers to start using or bartering their stocks to those folks who waited or scoffed.

When/ if the time arrives, the time to prepare is gone.

“thief in the night” moment.

Just my two cents.

No such thing as “price gouging” on non-essential items. The term “gouging” is a leftest entitlement concept.

These are toys, nothing more. Essentially jewelry for men.

If someone is willing to pay a million bucks for the last “unregistered” AR available in the US, that is what it is worth.

Thanks. I guess I didn't copy the whole link. I pinged the mods to correct it. Until they do, here it is.

I used to have a Chicom AK. Also got rid of it (after firing about 10,000 rounds out of it). I'm more of a Mini-14 guy. Honestly, I think pistol grips are great for full-auto fire but for semi-auto, I prefer a standard rifle stock. Just my $0.02. A buddy of mine used to have one of those .357/.38 lever-action carbines. That was one of the most fun (and accurate) rifles I've ever shot! Really need to get my hands on one.

Yes, it could use an update.

The thread it was posted in is from 2008.

I don't know where it originated.

It seems to be going in the right direction, but could come to a sudden halt.

you can also put a more absorbing grip on it to reduce the feel of recoil further.

I have had a 357 carbine for decades now works well.

With handloads of H110 and 158jsp at 1850 fps it is a 2.5 inch gun at 150 yards. We have killed some deer with it.

A find handy rifle to have.
