Newspaper Publishes Gun Owners' Names and Addresses
Yahoo News ^ | 24 Dec 2012 | Colleen Curry

A newspaper in New York has received a wave of criticism from its readers after publishing the names and addresses of all of the individuals with handgun or pistol permits in its coverage area.

Hundreds of residents in New York's Westchester and Rockland counties were surprised to find their names and addresses listed on a map posted by The Journal News on Sunday. Users can click any dot on the map to see which of their neighbors has a permit for a gun.

The map sparked more than 500 comments from readers within a day of its appearance on the website, many of them voicing outrage at the paper's decision to make the information public.

"This is CRAZY!! why in the world would you post every licensed gun owner information?? What do you hope to accomplish by doing this. This is the type of thing you do for sex offenders not law abiding gun owners. What next? should i hang a flag outside my house that says I own a gun? I am canceling my subscription with your paper today!!!" said commenter Curtis Maenza.

"How about a map of the editorial staff and publishers of Gannett and Journal News with names and addresses of their families…," wrote commenter George Thompson.

All of the names and addresses were compiled through public records. The paper also requested the information from Putnam County, which is still compiling the records for publication, according to The Journal News' website.

In a statement to ABC News, The Journal News said its readers "are understandably interested to know about guns in their neighborhoods," because of the conversation about gun control on its website after the shooting in Newtown, Conn., last week. .

I am sure the newspaper was trying to set them up as targets for violent, kook protestors, yet the result is that they have told the other criminals addresses to avoid and what are the easier targets in the neighborhoods!

Burglars now know which homes to avoid and which to target. Non-owners are the ones who should be ticked. This is rich.

So many first reactions here relate to unveiling gun-free homes. Safe to say that will be burglars take too.

The danger of advertising gun-free zones is clear, but likely has never occurred to the publisher of The Journal They’ve stepped in it more than they know. Unintended consequences and a teachable moment.

Will the Journal follow crime rates and details of this area ?

What’s next? Publishing the names of all non-union members so they can be (excuse the terminology) “guided” or “influenced” to join the union?

I’m sure that the “new” Supreme Court would not find anything wrong with that nor would Obama’s “brown shirts.”

While this is IMO for one, an invasion of privacy -- 'public record' -- or not. There is an upside.

Now the Thugs, Burglars, and Home Invaders know which house is defenseless. Which I would think kinds invites violent crimes to be committed. Almost at will. So thanks ya idiot newspaper, you just made your leftist gun-grabbing cohort readers targets:

'Hey bad-guys we're utterly defenseless, come on over and rape or kill us.'

Have a nice day, morons.
Oh, and Merry Festivus-Kwanzaa-Whatever to you.

In the end, the communists will not 'play' with people's lives.

They will simply kill, en masse, as history shows they ALWAYS do.

Thank God I live in Texas. That nonsense is no allowed here.

The really, Really, REALLY weird thing is that in Massachusetts which has some of the WORST gun laws (if not THE worst) of any state in the union, the list of permit/CCL holders is *NOT* public record. The list can NOT be obtained by FOIA by slimball “news”paper publishers (but I repeat myself) for intimidatation/harassment.

The sick minds that conceived this intimidation of firearms owners are no different from the sick minds that conceived those acts in Germany in the 1930’s.

The term to apply to this action by the media is “brownshirting.”

Might be a plus. Tells the burglars where NOT to mess around. Also, with a little research as to addresses, tells the burglars who the unarmed, fair game, sitting ducks are, too.

I’m sure the names were published with hateful and hurtful motives, but I think it will backfire on them. I think it’s called UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES.

A reason to sue over invasion of privacy?

There has to be some sort of lawsuit lurking in this mess.

The article also gives out more info. It tells burglars, rapists, etc., all the people who DON’T have a gun.

Merry Christmas to both of you.

The subject of the thread brings me to repeat until I’m blue in the face; the MSM should suffer FIRST in the event of a civil war that they’re spoiling for.

All the disasters befalling our country are the sole responsibility of the MSM propaganda, lies and most of all lying by omission! Refusing to investigate and tell the truth is worse than lying.

There’s no democracy WITHOUT free press. Certainly, this doesn’t mean or imply that the MSM IS FREE TO LIE.

Well, see, I figure that for every REGISTERED gun, there are probably several more that are NOT registered, especially in New York. So....you wanna rob a house...you steps up and takes your chances.
