BOSTON (CBS) Some 1,000 United Synagogue Youth students turned out in Copley Square Wednesday to advocate against gun violence.
The students joined religious and local leaders and Colin Goddard, an advocate for the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence and a survivor of the Virginia Tech shooting in 2007.
The issue of gun violence touches every community our USYers come from and our teens are ready to raise their voices and make a difference, said Rabbi David Levy, director of teen learning for USCJ. Our kids are telling us adults, We want to feel safe, and we need to listen.
The rallys name The Praying with Our Feet: Rally Against Gun Violence was a nod to Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschels iconic phrase that he was praying with his feet when he marched in Selma, Ala. with the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1965.
Colin Goddard of the Brady Campaign was shot four times during the Virginia Tech shooting and survived. Goddard dialed 911 during the shooting and is credited for the fast arrival of the police.
After the shooting in Newtown, Connecticut last week and another shooting in Webster, New York this week, advocates for the group say things need to change.
It is unconscionable that with the escalation of gun violence in our nation there has been no real progress on the federal level, said Rabbi Wernick. It is time to force the hand of Congress to confront the National Rifle Association and their supporters. The massacre in Newtown, CT wounded the very soul of America. I am touched as a parent as well as a rabbi. The time has come to act.
I envy you your acquaintance with that great man and one of the greatest Jewish leaders ever.
It is the same “idiotic enabling” that brought his “tribe” to the ghettos and then the concentration camps....
If I were a thug, I’d be there with my homies ready to mug those unarmed innocents when they left or maybe follow them home. Self identifying easy targets.
You are correct when you say they want to corrupt the Children.
They can never defeat us while our morals and convictions remain strong.
The first must Fundamentally Transform Jews and Judaism is to some Bastard State Approved version of it.
All within the state, nothing outside the state, nothing against the state.
Please see MadMax's Explanation of this 2DV.
Id like this bastard to look me in the face and tell me that this kind of advise is sane, and then Ill tell him that my whole European family was shot, gassed or otherwise executed in Lemberg, Belzec and Auschwitz.
We have a word for people like Wernick, besides Putz. It is KAPO.
I am proud to be a member of the J.F.P.O and you should be too!
Misleading headline. Most everyone is against gun violence. They were rallying for gun control.
Unarmed Jews have been killed all over America by knives and guns and rifles and bombs. Armed Jews have not. Rabbi Meir Kahane, an acquaintance of mine, was stabbed to death by an Al Qaeda operative. A woman in a Jewish organization in Seattle was shot to death as was a Jewish worker at LAX.
You knew Meir Kahane!? Arguably one of the Greatest Jewish minds of this age? I am so Jealous Max. I wish to high heaven that he would have lived past 1990. I was only Two but I remember when Rabin was killed my Mother telling us about how distraught she was wehn Rabbi Kahane was assassinated.
I couldn't help but notice when I went to check the exact date of the Rabbi's death that Wikipedia has the J.D.L. labeled as a Militant group.
MestaMachine nailed it quite well in post #12 about this Idiotic Rabbi being an Easy Jew.
There are a lot of Jewish veterans of Vietnam, Gulf War I and OIF/Afghanistan who are not standing by unarmed and with our heads buried in the sand. That includes members of my family and our Vietnam veterans groups.
One of the First things my Father did when he came to this country is enlist in the USMC, he went to Vietnam and was present for the Fall of Saigon.
The Famous evacuation pictures he says he was there pushing the Choppers over the side.
Thank you and your FIL for your service, to repay you for that I will NOT be unprepared!
Kahane Chai! I have a manuscript. It is one of my greatest treasures.
