Senate Republicans open to new cliff deal

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell said late Thursday that Senate Republicans are open to any White House proposal to avert the fiscal cliff.

McConnell said he and House Speaker John Boehner spoke with President Barack Obama on Wednesday night as the president prepared to return to Washington from his Christmas vacation in Hawaii.

“I told the president I would be happy to look at whatever he proposes,” McConnell said, in a brief statement on the Senate floor. “The action is on the Senate side, and we will see if we can move forward on a bipartisan basis.

“We’ll see what the president has to propose — members on both sides of the aisle will review it — and then we’ll decide how to proceed,” McConnell said.

“Hopefully,” he said, “there is still time for an agreement of some kind that saves taxpayers from a wholly preventable economic crisis.”

Republicans would not “write a blank check” just because the deadline for the fiscal cliff is little more than four days away, he said.

Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid responded that his party wanted assurances that Republicans in the House and Senate would remove roadblocks that had killed earlier legislation to avoid the fiscal cliff.

“I would be most happy to move forward on something that Sen. McConnell said they wouldn’t filibuster over here ... and Boehner would support, if it was reasonable,” Reid said. “But, right now, we haven’t heard anything.”

Earlier in the afternoon, House Republican leaders said they will return to Washington for an unusual evening session Sunday. That would give lawmakers a chance to review any plan the Senate may be able to pass to avert the billions of dollars in tax hikes and spending cuts due to kick in beginning Jan. 1.

Open to “any proposal” from the White House? Epic cave! Oh, well, now all of the government can be blamed for the economic catastrophe headed our way. ‘F’ em all!

McConnell needs to go over the cliff with Boehner.

They are the “Thank You Sir, may I have another” twins.

We need real leaders.

If they’ve waited this long, why not wait ‘til the new Congress is in session? Lame duck law is potentially very bad law, because the exiting legislators have no further responsibility.

Senate Republicans open to new cliff deal

Say the word “deal” and they all run to it like a mouse (rat) to cheese!

How many times have we reached a political stalemate in which all of the people in America will die from political cool aid and were suddenly “saved” by the Republicans at the very last second caving into the Communists like a sinkhole in Florida?

Answer: Every time!

The point needs to be made that deal, or no deal, there is not going to be a major difference. This deal will not touch Obamacare taxes, which impact all, but people in upper brackets much more significantly. Any deal will add even more increases on the upper brackets, strangling the economy. The tax increases that expire on the 31st on lower and middle class people will be a bother, but will have little effect on the economy.

If they’ve waited this long, why not wait ‘til the new Congress is in session?

That might be worse because the Dems gain seats in both chambers.

My guess is that the WH has submitted a plan which may be acceptable to the Repubs in the Senate. Scott Brown let the cat out of the bag.

The reason they don't want this known is they don't want to make it seem like Obama made the first move i.e. "blinked".

That would set a precedent that he will have to lead also on other upcoming fights in '13. He doesn't want to have people waiting on him; he wants to blame Congress only.

If you're going to run someone against McConnell PLEASE make sure it's someone who can win.

Don't run a "rape-rape" candidate or a Christine McDonnell.

If we lose this one we end up with Ashley Judd in the Senate...UGH.

This is so easy to see coming. Obama will throw a sop to McConnell . It will be something like $450,000 and up will get there taxes raised. McConnell will cave. No Republican will filibuster!! (unless you demand a filibuster) It will include more welfare for those that wont work!! BUT EVEN WORSE it will include DEBT CEILING REMOVAL!!! (UCMTU) .
Then Boehner will allow a floor move to get 217 votes to force a vote on Sunday or Monday!!! He is the worst enemy of conservatives!! Then 42 liberal republicrats will jump to the socialist and we are screwed ,blued and tattooed!! Get ready and get mad!! Don’t just sit there!!Its coming!!

Obama already made the offer to McConnell this morning and Scott Brown leaked the news on Facebook. Now Obama and his winged monkeys are backtracking because of Scott Brown.
